Some friends were in Europe last summer. They visited several cities in 3 or 4 countries, but the only place they really disliked was Amsterdam. While they never specified exactly what it was about the place, they just said they never felt safe there.
I love Amsterdam and travel there somewhat frequently (three times in the last year for example). That said, they have a serious problem with North African youths preying on tourists. It’s pretty bad.
I go to New Orleans frequently as well (six times in the last year). I feel safer in New Orleans despite that being one of the murder capitals of the US. No one follows me in NOLA and I don’t have to constantly look around at my surroundings in the tourist center like I do in Amsterdam.
I’ve even had to stop two “youths” following two screaming female locals/tourists on one of my trips. Surprised once the girls made it into their apartment/Air BnB that the guys following them didn’t try to rob me. Guess they didn’t want to deal with a loud, angry, drunk American that night.
