Weird PC problem: Bluetooth works with Edge, not Brave or Chrome
Me | 1/17/2024 | Paul R.

Posted on 01/17/2024 1:54:02 PM PST by Paul R.

Can a computer problem get any weirder? I'm running a fast Dell laptop with Win 11 Pro. If I play audio from YouTube while browsing with Brave (or Chrome), System sounds, test tones from Windows' troubleshooter, etc., play over a bluetooth speaker just fine, but the audio on the YouTube vid plays only over the tiny laptop speakers. (Nothing is connected to the headphone jack.)

I've been all through Windows troubleshooting, and even a session with a MS tech support rep, to no avail, other than doing a Shift + Shutdown now results with (after booting back up and returning to You Tube) the You Tube audio playing over the Bluetooth speaker if using MS Edge, but audio coming from YouTube via Brave or Chrome still plays over the laptop's speakers. What on Earth is going on?

Note that if You Tube audio is playing over the Bluetooth speaker using MS Edge, the audio coming from YouTube via Brave or Chrome still plays SIMULTANEOUSLY over the laptop's speakers.

If I plug in wired headphones, swap "wired headphones" for "laptop speakers" in any of the description above.

This annoys the heck out of me, as using Brave on other computers (and this one, previously)knocked out the ads. I might be able to tolerate an ad at the beginning of a vid, but, ads interrupting, say, a long relaxing smooth jazz piece are just not tolerable.

Strangely, if it was possible to easily switch this in and out, it could be quite useful: piping different audio from one computer to two different rooms, for example.

Note that I believe this problem cropped up either after a MS update or my beginning to use an EcoCarbon bluetooth speaker. (Regardless of what you think of the name, it's a darn good sounding little speaker.) As it is, does anyone know how to "fix" this problem in Brave? Or Chrome, for that matter, though I'd much rather use Brave.

Thanks!

Hmmm... Looks like there is an issue with wi-fi, but nothing about Bluetooth...

Thanks anyway - SURELY I can’t be the only person to run into this...

If you mean I should pester my daughter about trying to get one of my old machines running on Linux, well, I can try...

If you are using both WiFi and Bluetooth, the two radios can interfere with each other. It's because they use the same band of frequencies. One fix, if your equipment supports it, is to set your WiFi router to use 5 GHz only.

When I encountered the problem, I stopped using WiFi with my laptops and desktops, and went with wired Ethernet. The problem is that, in my apartment, I'm surrounded with a large number of WiFi access ports (probably routers) so the sources of interference are out of my control. I don't think you have THAT problem, from your description.

Background: both Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz WiFi share the same frequencies. So does your microwave oven. Some portable phones (not just cell phones) use it, too. Lots of opportunities for cross-interference.

I use linux, but this should direct you to where to look

In a search, use

win 11 assigning audio output to devices

I used duckduckgo and got stuff like

The hardware you have is trying to directly access the hardware, instead of going through the windows api.

I run into this all the time with GPS antennas. Some programs will allow direct hardware calls but some won’t.

In the GPS scenario is to prevent tricking the system into thinking it is somewhere that it is not. Chrome is very sensitive with location data, but others are not. You can use a garmin software with an antenna, but not anything chrome unless it’s an api-compliant driver.

That is what I do. My main computer is hardwired. I have other devices that use WiFi and don't have any apparent problem with internet connections. Newer routers are sort of like automatic CB radios. When they boot up, they will scan for a vacant frequency and then lock in. I think it is unlikely a $100 router will change frequencies on the fly...

Thanks, but I don’t think this is an interference problem, as the Bluetooth works fine if I use Edge for the browser. Also, the problem is recent. I’m just not sure if it started when I started using the EcoCarbon speaker (which was ok at first) or if it started with a recent Windows update.

My smaller Dell laptop has no problem (identical placement of laptop, router, and bluetooth speaker.)

And last, I’m already using the 5 GHz band on the wireless router with this :-)

At this point I’m suspecting some arcane browser settings.

Ah, following that eventually gave a solution: Kill the internal laptop speakers in settings, and THEN turn on the Bluetooth (now works with any Bluetooth speaker I try.)

WHY this is different than a few days ago, when Bluetooth worked normally with Brave and Chrome, I have not a clue...

Anyway, thanks!
