CHICAGO - Chicago Public Schools (CPS) reported millions of dollars in tech devices lost or stolen in their first post-pandemic inventory.
The CPS Office of Inspector General (OIG) released its annual report for FY 2023 on Tuesday with statistics on misconduct, waste, fraud, financial mismanagement and sexual misconduct.
According to the OIG, among the most significant findings, CPS reported an "unacceptably high percentage" of technology devices lost or stolen. The Inspector General says the lack of returns was due to flawed inventory and recovery processes.
During the 2021-22 school year, CPS reported 77,505 devices, with a total original price of over $23 million, as lost or stolen.

Whooda seen that coming?
77,000 items! That is mass theft. It is either organized for profit or a sign of a systemic breakdown of ethics. This is far more and far worse than a lack of accounting safeguards.
Most government agencies do not perform the same kind of inventory of their assets as private companies do. What they do is they take a snapshot of everything they have on hand and they call that their inventory.
No effort is ever made to reconcile purchases with things that are sent out for surplus or trash in order to reconcile what has been stolen or misappropriated.
Wonder who retired first?.
If only those republicans in Chicago would give the schools more money...
