Its hockey- they are usually tough, hard working kids who come from tough, hard working blue collar families.
I played hockey as a kid- my dad, who was NYPD, would work the 4 to 12 shift then get up at 4:30am because he had to drive me to my game at 5:30 in the morning.

That may have been true in 1980, but not so much anymore.
In the U.S. these days, hockey players are more likely to come from wealthy families that can afford the exorbitant cost of summer hockey camps, travel teams, and top prep schools.
I went to summer hockey camp, sleep away camps, and i was on the travel team that went to Switzerland. Yeh there were some uber rich kids- one specifically who arrived in a chauffeured vehicle every Saturday, yet the majority were blue collar families.
Ever play at Sport O Rama in Suffern or Rye Playland? Depending on how old you are, we might have shared the same sheet of ice..
Sport O Rama- yes..
Playland- no
Rye Country Day- often
Started in the mid 70’s in Elmsford. I believe it was called the Westchester Skating Rink. Moved on to the Harvey School where i player for Hickory Hill
Played at Ebersol Rink in White Plains and a lot in Ct- Dorothy Hammil rink in Greenwich, the Crystal Ice Palace which was a craphole. Good times!!
We’re close in age. I played for two years at Trinity Pawling after the Saints. I played at Ebersol a few times and DHR as well. The worst one I played in was that rink alongside the Thruway in Yonkers...
I actually almost went to Trinity Pawling for hockey but at that time in my life i was making the move to track and field and they only had a club team
