There should be no ‘town police’. They are accountable to the town council, not the people. They are misused as a revenue source for the town via silly parking ticket ordnances, etc.

Sheriffs, on the other hand, are elected by the people and accountable to the people.

I agree, besides nothing worse than a small town with more “bored” officers than it really needs.

I grew up in a town of about 400 in Wisconsin. We had a constable. He responded to a crime but the real work was done by the Sheriffs Department. He was basically a liaison with the Sheriffs department. I do not think he could even issue traffic tickets.

I am pretty sure the Town Council elected by the people were going to get rid of the cops and go with the Sheriffs Department. Townsfolk don't always like that option as it can mean. longer response times by Sheriffs Deputies.
