Russia's Egg Crisis is Spiraling Out of Control
Newsweek ^ | 12/29/2023 | Isabel van Brugen

Russia's egg crisis spiraled out of control this week after an attempt was made on the life of the head of a poultry farm in the Voronezh region, with prices for the staple food item continuing to climb.

Gennady Shiryaev, the 59-year-old head of the Tretyakov Poultry Farm, the largest in the western Voronezh region, was driving home when an unknown person fired two shots at his car. Shiryaev told Russian news outlet Kommersant that he wasn't injured in the assassination attempt. "There were two shots, it didn't hit me," Shiryaev said.

Russia has seen an unprecedented surge in egg prices this year against a backdrop of high inflation and sanctions imposed by the West in response to President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

In November, egg prices rose by 40.29 percent year-on-year, according to the Russian Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat).

And yet:

https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/4206329/posts

Russia's economy is going strong despite sanctions from the U.S. and its allies

Despite sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine, the Russian economy has not suffered.

Russia has been hit with huge economic sanctions since it invaded Ukraine nearly two years ago. But the Russian economy has remained strong, defying many economists' expectations.

So Putin and his Government has lots of oil money, but nowhere to spend it?

Their stores look a lot nicer than ours, are well stocked, and prices MUCH more stable and lower. Their government isn’t at war agsinst tgeir own citizens for some strange reason.

My bets are on the Easter Bunny hoarding eggs for this coming Easter. That’s what’s causing prices to spike.

Also, Russia refused to give their pensioners a cost of living increase for 2024.

The same can be said about the US.
Not so much of Japan.
And Mexico just doesn’t care - whatever age.

I was in the Russian Federation when the Ruble was first “revalued” - just devastated those pensioners too old to go back to work.

That when you would see the little old babushkas on the street selling heroin to make food money.

In Moscow and St. Petersburg, yes.

Rest of Russia is more like a third world country.
