The war was just a continuation of the federalist vs anti federalist conflict . The civil war marked the end of the federal system in the us. We are essentially a unitary system of government now I have always characterized it as the Hamiltonians against the Jeffersonians.
Very different philosophies regarding the proper role of government in the lives of it's citizens.
