I have known briefly by association two former NFL players. Both defensive linemen.
The first one was the star of his college team. He had a 4.0 GPA while being the captain of the team at a large university.
He was drafted into the NFL and played as a starter for eight years. He retired, wrote several novels after regarding sports. He also owns several rental properties.
The other one was also a star on his college team. He was drafted and played as a backup lineman for six years. He retired from the NFL and was hired as a rookie lumber trader by a sister company of mine. He worked for them for about ten years then transferred to another sister company. He is still in the the industry today and has been a lumber broker like me for over 35 years.
Yep I’ve heard that a lot of these wealthy athletes have a posse to pay.
They may have a lot of hangers on, who they have on their payroll. They may have some girlfriends they’re supporting, and friends and family members who they give jobs to. Before you know it the money is all spoken for.
where’s all his football money? he could not have spent it all on grills.
Cut him some slack...he blew through all the millions he made as a running back for the New York Thugs and is hungry.
When they end their NFL career they keep spending like they still have that paycheck coming. It takes a lotta dough to keep up appearances.
Most of it went to taxes.

He spent all his money on booze, hookers and drugs. The rest of the money he just squandered.
Can’t wait until Labone James winds up destitute on skid row.
I would bet the crimes are drug related.

I see the same thing here as a lumber broker. There are people I work with that go from making nothing to a six figure income. Some to $250K or more in a very short time period.
They buy big houses, fancy cars, Hawaiian vacations, etc.
Then they have a bad year and they have nothing saved. Nothing to fall back on. Nothing in reserve. Then the STRESS kicks in.
Marriages fall apart.
We used to have a saying for it when we were kids that is politically incorrect today:

Great comments, yes there needs to be protection of the players from all forms of abuse.
One has to be a moron going from making millions to resorting to robbery. He at least could use his NFL ID as a former player to garner some gainful employment. He’s a thug criminal by choice and hence a moron.
A former Cowboys player was dealing drugs after his playing days, mostly for the thrill of it, not necessarily because he needed the money. Gotta find that adrenaline rush from somewhere, I suppose.
When your only skill set is running away with something that doesn’t belong to you, what else are you good for?...............
Personal responsibility is a great goal, but who do we hold responsible for the lack of personal responsibility? The players, the families, the schools, the government? All have failed the players!
