Fired professor rebukes school board after judge rules against DEI faculty mandates: 'You will lose'

A California history professor delivered a scathing rebuke of his former administration after a federal judge struck a blow to the statewide Diversity, Equity and Inclusion "DEI" mandates for faculty.

Tenured professor Matthew Garrett was dismissed last April from Bakersfield College in the Kern Community College District after he says far-left professors and students brought false accusations against him because of his opposition to DEI policies on campus. Administrators have argued he was disciplined for "unprofessional" conduct and "unsatisfactory performance," according to a 19-page report from interim college president Zav Dadabhoy last March. He is fighting the decision through the legal system and remains suspended without pay.

At the KCCD Board of Trustees meeting this week, Garrett demanded the district reinstate him, citing the recent court case and growing distrust between faculty and the administration at the college.

"By now it is painfully obvious that you made a mistake," he told the Board of Trustees. "You cannot hope to prevail in court. There is no value in dragging this out."

"I can't stop you from making this process painful for me and my family," Garrett pleaded. "You've driven me onto welfare. You've robbed my children of Christmas. You've taken food out of their mouths, and it's true you can make me suffer more. But I am unbreakable. In the end, you will lose. The longer this drags out, the greater the cost to taxpayers. At this point, you are on the hook for at least a few million dollars for retaliation, defamation and legal fees."

"You’ve become the Grinch who stole Christmas for my children. But in the end it is the Kern County taxpayers who will be robbed. Is that really what you want to do?" he asked.

Garrett's plea comes as these DEI rules for colleges...

“You’ve robbed my children of Christmas. You’ve taken food out of their mouths, and it’s true you can make me suffer more.”

One down, millions to go. This is the objective of every liberal policy, to make life as difficult as possible for decent, working people, so that you have to be dependent on them and they control you.

“ Too bad the administrators cannot be sued personally.”

Oh but they can be. 18USC1983 allows for damages and can be applied to individuals as well as organizations. Just need to find the right judge.

Yes and no.
Affirmative action tried to act at least somewhat within the limits of human rights, law, and constitution.
DEI is affirmative action running amok!

Is everyone having to “register to read this article for free”? Fox started off pasting this on a few articles, now it comes up all the time. No thanks, but is Lachlan thinking about going behind a pay wall, like 10 free articles per month as other sites have done?

In his defense I will offer that the title was ambiguous enough that if one read just the headline they might not realize what his role was exactly. I too thought he might have been fired because of the ruling by the court, as a result of reading the headline. It wasn't until I read the first 2 paragraphs that I realized what had actually transpired.

Even I have been guilty of doing that exact same faux-pas. 🙂

Garrett headed the Renegade Institute, a group of free-speech activists at Bakersfield College. Their Recommended Reading list is impressive and includes classics from Homer to Hayek. They also have a Libguide with suggested readings on Western democratic traditions and American ideals as well as links to podcasts and lectures. These are great resources for students seeking to go beyond "wokeness" and expand their knowledge of Western Civ.
