Information request:How much is the limit of gasoline that you are able to pump in your area?

I have a 50 gallon reserve fuel tank that I fill up when i find slightly cheaper gas on occasion and I've noticed that different places cut me off for different reasons. One place cut me off at 35 gallons. Another place, 25 Gallons. Today I was cut off at $99. I dont understand why the inconsistency. BTW, I am located in the Huntsville, Alabama area. 87 octane was $2.79 today.

Credit card limit at the pump. Just close that sale and restart.

Maybe the refinery in your area is undergoing maintenance. When that happens, their ability to produce gas goes down.

Having said that, I think the limit to a credit card purchase is about $200CDN and no limit on debit, normally.

They are cutting you off to limit your credit purchase. Each company may have a different amount

Usually it will cut off at $100.
Close it out and do it again.

One reason could be the pre-auth amount, which is set by your bank and by the gas station. When you scan your card you are pre-authorizing a certain amount. It might be $100, or $75, or some other amount. After you are done dispensing then a settling transaction for the actual amount is sent to your bank and they should remove this per-auth hold. But if your pre-auth was for $100, then that is as if you went inside and gave them 100. The pump stops at that point.

Not sure about a gallon limit. It might just be a coincidental alignment with the pre-auth amount.

A big RV was in front of me at Costco, the screen showed $180 which worked out roughly to 55 gallons.

They messed with the limit when gas was sky high. I think the most I ever put in my Jeep was pushing $125 and it was seamless with no stoppages. Those prices were FUNAR.

I live in San Diego, and I have been limited more than a few times to $100. I drive a diesel pickup, and diesel has been well over $6/gallon a few times here, meaning I was cut off with less than 1/2 a tank. Lately I have not been limited much, though I was cut off at $200 last month. I don’t normally let my tank get that empty, but I guess with Biden Bucks, $200 is the new $100. I’ve never been limited by gallons, just $$$.

There was a thread here on this exact same subject, last year I'm pretty sure.

That’s what my local gas station states, they have a sticker with each bank/credit company and their limits, ranging from $100 to $300 depending on the institution.

There’s a gas station that I use that’s also geared to commercial trucks. The previous sale still showed on the pump that I was about to use, $1,500.

The first place a dishonest person uses a lost credit card is a gas pump.

Ahh, the good old days when you pumped however much you needed and went in and paid with cash

There is another reason in play if you are getting gas at a pump associated with a grocery store. We always get gas at Tom Thumb or Kroger because our “points” entitle us to a $1 discount per gallon for one transaction. It limits us to $25 purchase. Otherwise, I would have my family lined up at the pump filling up. We just do 2 cars at once.

But in 1974, I could get gas for less than $0.20/gallon. Whenever there was a gas war, it was usually $0.14.

I use a cooperate card linked to the semi I drive and every station I use has a different max out.

No rhyme, no reason.
