Cataract Surgery Question
10/31/2023 | Tnoldman

Posted on 10/31/2023 7:16:48 AM PDT by TNoldman

My Eye Surgeon is recommending Near Vision in both eye with -2.50 IOLs.Please explain what this means in terms of uncorrected vision -Near, Intermediate and Far. I will get Near Focus in each eye with Standard IOLs.

I desire to keep my Nearsightedness and desire to wear glasses all the time except for really close work. I need protective glasses for my hobbies where my eyes could be injured.

Why did you not ask your doctor this question? I mean that is what he is there for, besides the surgery aspect.

Some people can handle different focus distance.
They can give you temp contacts to see if your brain can adjust.
I couldn’t do it.

I got both eyes done, 3 years apart.
Mine likely were triggered by Alupurinol pills over many years.
I did what is called, monovision, where each eye is different.
I have one eye at 15 inches focus and the other for distance.
Works fine. That’s about 2 diopters difference. Glasses will correct to equalize if you are doing critical stuff, but for day-in-day-out activities I never touch glasses, even when driving. No laser, or cataracts, just ‘brain compensation’, most of the time.

This is not one Near and one Far.
Both eyes near.

I cannot use any reading glasses anymore as my eyes are too different. But on medicare I get no charge Rx glasses and have more than I know what to do with !!
I could at times use a one-eyed reading glass(es) but why when Rx is no charge.

My wife and I chose one eye for reading, the other for distance. Works great for us, as our brains (at least) shut off the blurry eye. We also have glasses to get both eyes into reading focus, and another pair to do the same for distance, and even another for computer use (which is halfway between reading and distance). The single-focus basic glasses only cost $7 at Zenni, so no hit on our finances either. If you go this route, also buy an instrument to measure “Pupilary Distance”, the distance between your pupils, as you need that info to order glasses (roughly $150 at Amazon, but a great investment).

Anyway, that’s our story...I believe that they want people to test this Monovision Option with contacts first, to make sure it doesn’t drive them nuts, since it’s next to impossible to change your mind once the new lenses are dropped in.

Best of luck!

Sometimes a doctor’s waiting room is a great place to talk with others and learn much more than from the doctor. You learn people’s real world experiences.

God didn’t plan for monovision, but well maybe his brain design does !

I chose for vision, very happy with that. I find it pretty much anything under 6 feet is increasingly out of focus as it gets closer. My only frustration is that my reading, computer, and a mid distance are all requiring different glasses in that under 6 foot distance. As you look at choosing near, you might give that some consideration as to which near you are talking about.

Took me two years to adjust after three or four attempts. Theoretically, only 25% of people can adjust. I wanted trifocal lens but have a Scandinavian eye problem that prohibited their use. My dr. ultimately gave me a distance and a mid-field for the other one. I can drive and still see the speedometer.

“God didn’t plan for monovision, but well maybe his brain design does !”

But perhaps He did. In the long-ago past, I suspect that damage to an eye was quite common...people would retain some vision, but it sucked, so He said: “Let’s shut that one off, it’s better that way”, and so Monovision works, at least for some here!

I already posted you what I did. I asked surgeon to use lens which will allow me to use existing glasses. I am short sighted. I love the artificial lens. Now 12 years later still no problems. I am age 83.

I am not a Opthmologist and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. However, my wife had lens replacement on both eyes this year. She was near sited. Had worn glasses for over fifty years. Now, she only needs glasses to see up close in low light situations. Typical cheaters/reading glasses you buy for $4 each.

She had the choice prior to the operation of being able to see farther away(she chose) or seeing up close. Not both.

I have been super happy with my multi focal IOLs. My doctor recommended getting them done a week apart, and I have had a fantastic experience. It was very easy to adjust. After surgery he saw me the next day and my vision was 20/30 within 24 hours, Remarkable. He nailed the measurements and placements. Couldn’t be a bit happier. I feel like the luckiest girl on the planet. I started wearing glasses when I was 10, so this has been a game changer for me. I can see close, far, and everywhere in between. He thought I might have trouble with threading a needle, but I’ve had no problems with that so far. I can read teeny tiny print.

As far as protective glasses for when you’re working, aren’t those a lot less than buying corrective glasses every few years? I can use the protective work glasses from the hardware store now.

You may be older than I am. I developed cataracts at an early age. I am super thrilled that I am unlikely to ever need glasses again. Just sunglasses for the really sunny days.

Timely question. I’m about to undergo cataract surgery as well. Heavily clouded right eye as a result of the heavy steroid use during chemo treatment a few years ago.

Probably getting a monofocal with enhanced focal depth. Eyhance or EnVista. Doctor hasn’t made a final choice.

Not entirely happy about it. But, I’ve become accustomed to using “readers” for close work. Considered the multi-focal style lens. But, decided that the possible downside of halos or flares at night, and reduced acuity due to the multiple light paths was less acceptable than reading glasses.

Sadly, there’s no perfect solution. Just a choices between compromises. I have had similar experience with getting meaningful and understandable answers from the doctors. On my third try to get one with a personality and ability to communicate better than a turnip.

I’m a retired mechanical engineer. I seem to know more about optics than the doctors I’ve spoken with so far. And that’s not my specialty!

A lot would depend on what type of work you do or other extracurricular activities you enjoy.
Do you want to not have to wear glasses for reading or computer and maybe only for driving? I think that’s what I would consider near corrected.
