What's going on with the Pittsburgh deer hunt -- and what's next?

PITTSBURGH — In Frick and Riverview parks, four deer were killed by hunters Aug. 30, the first day of a controversial archery hunt intended to reduce the city's white-tailed deer population.

Mayor Ed Gainey's office said last week that archers so far had harvested another 24 in Pittsburgh's first attempt to control its wildlife.

A limited number of volunteer archers were approved to harvest the deer from assigned tree stands while the parks are open. Friday afternoon no injuries, hunting violations or archer harassment had been reported.

Grew up in the area, lots of deer.

Was on a commercial bus as a kid, and it hit a buck, the driver put the carcass in the luggage compartment, my mom said, that's going to be a lot of deer jerky.

Many, many years ago I was driving through a Pittsburgh neighborhood at around 10 PM. A deer jumping out in front of me. I hit the brakes, and just barely missed it.

But deer often travel in packs. So I waited. And sure enough, six more deer crossed the road.

Folks who whine and complain about deer harvesting should view pictures of fatal car accidents involving deer. That might not change their minds. But it might shut them up for a day or two.

I had a doe and two large fawns cross in front of me just yesterday. Saw mom go across the road and knew there were more to follow, so I slowed down. Sure enough, the kids were following mom.

We are absolutely overrun with white tail deer here in the Coeur d’Alene area. Dalton Gardens near here proposed bow hunting and half the town supported it and the other half went absolutely ape-sh1t nuts about it. I don’t recall how it turned out.

Our town quietly harvests them when nobody is looking.

I’ve counted up to 26 on our neighbor’s property (they feed the rats). They quit feeding them and the herd cull got it down to a couple of does and four fawns this summer. I quit spraying my plants and they quickly devoured my Burning Bush and Sedums.

Damn rats!

What’s controversial about it?

Without hunts, more deer will get hit and more car wrecks will happen and people will die in some of those wrecks

Plenty of deer left after the season

“packs”

hmmm .... herds ...?

Just poking at you ....

But on topic ... I live in a very out of the way place.
20 years ago opening morning sounded like ww3 had just started ...
Now ... nothing .. didn’t hear a shot . I have at least a dozen deer that come up in the yard. They know me. They barely look at me when I go out among them.

I used to take 1/2 a dozen or so every year. It’s what we ate. The young folks ... under 45 or so ... don’t hunt.
I took my sons hunting .. did my best .. they don’t hunt.

Shooting targets is not the same.
It’s a shame.

I used to put out flowers of all sorts every summer. The deer would devour them. I knew it was deer because of the hoof prints.

Then my local garden center put out a bunch of flowers labeled “Deer Resistant”. Hurray! I can have flowers in my yard again.

The deer ate all these flowers. Perhaps I should go back to the garden center, and tell them to change their sign to “Deer Treats”.

Yes, they were deer packs. A “pack” is more than one deer, but less than ten.
A “herd” is ten deer or more.

(Okay, I just made that completely up. I am practicing to be a Democrat politician.)

Year ago I lived a stone’s throw away from the Shenandoah National Park. No hunting allowed and the deer looked like concentration camp inmates. All bony and ribs showing.

If they had controlled hunts by the Park Service or designated volunteers they could give the meat to poor people at a food bank.

Maybe you should scent mark your property so the deer leave your plants alone. Go get a bunch of beer, and the rest will come naturally. Maybe late at night so you don’t traumatize the neighbors.

“A “herd” is ten deer or more.”

Forever and always from this point forward ... I will unwaveringly refer to 10 or more deer as a “pack”.

I will argue the point steadfastly ... with no quarter.

I will correct news paper articles, conversations and any other references to the point.

In 10 years or less .... it will be common knowledge that 10 deer or more is a pack.

Let me know when you hear ... when the circle is complete.

A “herd” is ten deer or more.

ooops ...wait .... “ A “pack” is more than one deer, but less than ten.”

ok .. ok ... one or more < 10 = pack

10 or more is a herd..

I hope this helps you as you are “ practicing to be a Democrat politician.”

It makes a lot more sense (including fiscal sense) than a hare-brained idea they had down here some years ago: they were going to ‘birth-control’ the females...

The deer are starting to wear armor
The hunters are using armor piercing bullets to counter them....

Blood Meal around the garden or property line stops deer. You have to water the blood meal every other day to keep it moist and the smell of blood active. Deer and most every animal that smells blood, senses death and leave.

I have to use pig’s blood (Plantskyyd) as well as coyote urine to slow the leggy rats down. They eat everything around here: tomato and potato plants, catnip, cedar, you name it. They sample the marigolds every couple of weeks, too. The only thing I haven’t seen them eat are the peonies and pennyroyal.

They don’t eat my peonies.

I use a variety of defenses. Plantskyyd (nasty stuff!), Deer Scram (pepper powder), Liquid Fence, Deer Out, Bobbex, a decoy coyote, a couple of pink flamingos, six motion-activated sprinklers (permanently installed with water line last year), and a whirligig.

If I keep the spraying up about every two weeks, I’m good. I rotate sprays.

I let my defenses down when we went on a trip in late August. It took a while for them to come back, but they came back and stripped my Burning Bush and Sedums. The Sedums really hurt because they were just going into the beautiful fall mature color.

As long as I keep up the defenses, I can keep them at bay. They’ve learned to stay about 20 yards away from my line of deer sprinklers.

They also don’t eat my Hellibores (Lenten Rose), lavender and some other very prickly plants.
