I believe he had become disillusioned with the reality of life in the workers paradise and attempted suicide. The Russians realized then , as they first did that Oswald was mentally unstable and needed to be gone. Marina would have married him regardless of any wealth he might have had. In her eyes he was an American and her ticket of of a Soviet hell hole.
