Not much to say here. The studio version is much better. But it's fun to see this band perform. So good. So polished.

TOPICS: Music/Entertainment
KEYWORDS: bread; gates; music
David Gates could be the male equivalent of my tagline. I wonder if they ever got to sing together?

Great band, not my favorite tune but regardless, well done.
Knetchel, Gates, and Botts, but is that James Griffin to the left of Gates? Does not look like it.

Do we not have taglines anymore? I don’t have my glasses on.

Mine was Autotune is jealous of Karen Carpenter

Not a big fan of Bread.

But we had the album growing up, so I know the songs all too well.

I’m not seeing your tagline.
Meanwhile, Bread has always been one of my favorite bands from that era. In reality, it was always: David Gates and Bread as his backup group. No disgrace in being back up to real talent. David wrote and sang most their hits.
He had such a smooth, easy manner of singing, he nearly made it sound easy. Excellent music. Thoughtful lyrics.
Not over produced.

David Gates is 82 years old and married to the woman he married in 1958. They were high school sweethearts🥰

Try this for high school students who made a mark on music:
Will Rogers HS, Tulsa:
Leon Russell
David Gates
Elvin Bishop
Anita Bryant

All were within a couple of years of each other in school.
Another kid who moved away from Tulsa before going to high school with them was the great session drummer, Jim Keltner.

That’s quite a heritage for one public high school.

Yes - I’ve read about this before. Fascinating accumulation of talent.

Also the story of Jimmy Johnson (football coach) going to HS w/ Janis Joplin and not treating her so well.

That’s amazing. Whatever they put in the high school drinking fountains was obviously effective.

OP comment #1 is special, doesn’t use the normal comment dialog, so it doesn’t know about taglines.

Your tagline looks fine in subsequent comments.

Thank you so much for posting this. I was in high school in the 60's, focused on Hendrix, Cream, Yardbirds, etc. so I regarded Bread as just another soft-rock band, like America, or Eagles-lite; I recognized that they were talented even though they weren't a band I followed as a fan.

But your post got me to view that live video, and I really enjoyed it. That led me to the Wikipedia page on Bread, which at last after 50 years answered my question about how they got that band name:

A bread truck came along right at the time we were trying to think of a name. We had been saying, "How about bush, telephone pole? Ah, bread truck, bread." It began with a B, like the Beatles and the Bee Gees. Bread also had a kind of universal appeal. It could be taken a number of ways. Of course, for the entire first year people called us the Breads.

They played that song and more in Wichita, Kansas that same year.

I was a young Airman and I asked a cute young Airman who had just arrived on base if she would go see Bread in concert with me. That was in September, 1978. We celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Famed studio guitarist Dean Parks is playing lead guitar here. He was the un-offical fourth member for a few years. Ironically Larry Knechtel who played lead on the original studio version is playing bass here.

Bread: Trukin’ (Down The Highway)

ROAD TRIP!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edDKaGzgOik&ab_channel=Mookie

Bread Lyrics
“Truckin’”

Truckin’ down the highway
Get outta my way
Always in a hurry
Always in between
That’s where you can find me
Truckin’ down the highway
Sittin’ in the cab of
A ten ton machine

Gettin’ pretty tired of stoppin’
In old run down cafes
Some day I’m gonna find me a woman
Rich enough to pay my way

Gonna make some inroads
Drivin’ home a payload
Truckin’ down the highway
Like you never seen

Gettin’ pretty tired of lookin’
In truck stop cabarets
Some day I’m gonna find me a woman
Rich enough to pay my way

Then you’re gonna find me
Truckin’ down the highway
Sittin’ in the back of
A long limousine
