I'm going to write this up since a lot of people don't know this.
While the Google 8.8.8.8 servers are pretty good, you can run your own DNS fairly easily. What you are looking for is your own 'recursive DNS server', preferably one that caches. There are several ways to approach it.
- Run 'Unbound' on your computer, then point your DNS to 'localhost'. Unbound is a very high grade DNS server software and can be found at this address (https://nlnetlabs.nl/projects/unbound/about/).
- Run a custom router or router firmware that includes ir can include something like Unbound (PFSense, OPNsense, OpenWRT).
- Keep your router, but add an additional appliance like a 'PiHole' to your network to act as your DNS (and also can kill a lot of ad stuff as well). PiHole is a piece of software that is traditionally run on a Raspberry Pi single-board computer. This is a pretty straightforward issue if you are a little computer-savvy, but the Raspberry Pis themselves are in an availability crunch right now. Good luck!
