NFL Week 1 Sunday Night Football live tracker: Cowboys roll to massive shutout win over Giants [40-0]

The Dallas Cowboys wasted no time kicking off their season on “Sunday Night Football.”

The Cowboys jumped out to a huge 16-0 lead almost instantly in their NFC East matchup with the New York Giants on Sunday night, the final game on the first Sunday of the 2023 season, before cruising to the 40-0 win. It marked the largest shutout win in team history.

But it wasn’t Dak Prescott and the offense that showed out. It was Dallas’ defense and special teams.

The Cowboys blocked a field goal to spoil what was otherwise a very impressive opening drive from the Giants at Metlife Stadium, and Noah Igbinghene ran it back 58-yards for a touchdown. Cowboys rookie kicker Brandon Aubrey missed the extra point, but the play still stunned New York on a very rainy night.

It was the first blocked field goal returned for a touchdown by the Cowboys since 2007. There was just one in the league last season.

Then later in the first quarter, Cowboys’ Trevon Diggs drilled Saquon Barkley and Daron Bland came up with an interception and ran it back for the second touchdown of the night.

As an Eagles fan, this is somewhat comparable to Russia-Ukraine.

I sort of don’t care about the game or who wins, but I hope there are lots of injuries.

That’s the thing about Week 1. The question is, Are the Cowboys that good, or are the Giants that bad?

You rarely see blowouts like that in the NFL.

Quite the game to start the season with.

But there are a lot of tough games to follow, for both teams.

And the next meeting between the Giants and the Cowboys will not follow the same script.

are the Giants that bad?

Giants and Yankees seem to reflect the state of New York pretty well.

In other MORE IMPORTANT news:

“Jordan Love delivers in opener, throws 3 TD passes as Packers beat Bears 38-20”

Jordan Love looked like he might be ready to follow in the footsteps of Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, throwing for three touchdowns to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 38-20 season-opening victory over the Chicago Bears.

LOVE SHINES

Love completed 15 of 27 passes for 245 yards and posted a 123.2 rating. His only previous start was a loss at Kansas City in 2021 when Rodgers was sidelined with COVID-19.

“I couldn’t be more proud of just his performance, his poise,” coach Matt LaFleur said. “There’s a big-time belief in that locker room for Jordan Love, and I think the guys are gonna rally around him. They’re excited for him. They love him. They respect him.”

Jones caught two passes for 86 yards. He turned a screen into a 51-yard gain that led to a scoring run for him in the third, and added a 35-yard touchdown off a short pass on the next drive.

Romeo Doubs had two touchdown catches. Quay Walker returned an interception 37 yards for a TD, and the Packers won for the 13th time in 14 games at Soldier Field.

General manager Brian Gutekunst hugged Love in the tunnel and high-fived other players. Loud cheering and clapping could be heard in the Packers’ locker room, and someone yelled, “I wanna stay here all night!”

The Bears still, and always will - Suck! :)

Exactly..

Shutouts are next to unheard of anymore in the NFL..

So was this the Cowboys are actually good? Or the Giants are just awful?

Given the state of the NFL today, I’d be prone to lean toward the latter, but I did not watch the game.

Shutouts in the NFL anymore are rare.

I didn’t watch the game, but my personal reaction to this is that to get that outcome the giants have to be in an awful state more than the Cowboys are great.

New contract for the QB Daniel Jones at $40 million per year for four years. First game got shutout 40-0. Not a good return on investment. It will top it all off for New York if Aaron Rodgers tears his Achilles tendon tonight when the Jets play Buffalo.

Jacksonville Jaguars survived a sloppy game against Indy and got the W! Here’s hoping for a good season. For the sake of my friend Al, I hope the Giants’ loss isn’t a portent for their season.
