At mine all they do is scan their employee badge and select “NO” to “Does customer look under 40?”
Generally, that’s what happens when I go through the self checkout, but I did have a guy ask for my ID (didn’t speak English well) a couple months ago when he was checking me out. I told him “no, I am over 40!” He was pretty shocked and started mumbling something about the computer - I gave him my birth date & he put it in without ID & we went on with the checkout process.

From what I’ve heard, in Japan all they do is have you self-verify that you’re at least 19 or whatever the drinking age is there. But given the fact that Japan’s justice system is still functional (regardless of whether you’re Japanese, or whether you’re Japanese [not much else there]), you had best be HONEST.
