Gil Brandt, overshadowed by coach Tom Landry and general manager Tex Schramm as part of the trio that built the Dallas Cowboys into "America's Team" in the 1970s, has died. He was 91.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame said Brandt died Thursday morning. No cause of death was given, but Brandt had been in declining health in recent years.
Brandt was the player personnel director alongside the stoic, fedora-wearing Landry and media-savvy Schramm, but had to wait almost 30 years longer to get into the Hall of Fame.

Didn’t know that he was still alive.
He and Landry built the Cowboys from an expansion team. Brandt was a great man. Many memories.
The good days. Gil Brandt, Tex Schramm & Tom.
That was when it was football.
I would miss Tom Landry if I still watched wokeball.
Tom Landry was an amazing and humble man. The Cowboys of that era didn’t win all the time, but pretty close. RIP Gil. Tell Tom hello for all of us.
I liked it when the Dallas Cowboys under Tom Landry clashed with the Houston Oilers under coach Bum Phillips. Landry, in his fedora, looked like a Texas oil man, while Phillips, in his Stetson hat, western shirt and cowboy boots—he wore a different pair for each game—looked like a Texas rancher.
I think Bum Phillips said that the Cowboys were America’s Team, but the Oilers were Texas’ team.
Jerry isn’t worthy to shine Gil’s boots.
I remember that quote from Bum Phillips after his team beat the Cowboys.
Bum was famous for many quaint Texas-isms. "I always kiss my wife twice when I go on a road trip so I don't have to kiss her when I come home"
But I digress....
“Tom Landry was an amazing and humble man.”
He also had a wicked sense of humor.
Once during pregame warmups he ambled over to the other teams players and spoke to them while pointing at his running back Tony Dorsett. He then walked over to Tony and said “I told them you were the one that’s been talking all the garbage about them.” Dorsett didn’t know what to say as he hadn’t said a word in the papers, TV or radio. Landry just grinned.
CBS’s Keith Russell reflects on Brandt’s impact on the game, and has reaction from Drew Pearson.

Thanks for the links.
Gil Brandt had that something that not only recognized raw talent but could sense the character of the athletes.
Schramm, Brandt had Landry MADE the Dallas Cowboys. And the only time I pulled for the ‘Boys was when they were playing the ‘Skins.
I hate that damned song.
