That’s the problem with text. Two important variables , facial expression and tone (voice) are missing so it can be difficult to convey humor/ sarcasm. I am also not a fan of smilies and the /s tag to convey that because if you have to tell someone something was meant to be sarcastic then the sarcasm is already dead. Just yesterday someone commented to me on YouTube “You can’t be serious !!! “. I wasn’t . But I didn’t say that. His reaction was good enough for me :)
It’s mostly obvious from either level of ridiculousness, or from numerous interactions here. With some people I know that they’re joking, with others you rarely interact with it gets difficult.
The world is so crazy now, it’s hard to decipher satire from reality.
I typically end my smartass posts with ellipsis.
