The question amongst the shotcaller brass was about the use and the scientists had little to do with that as you know

Some wanted a warning blast over water somewhere

But Stimson and Truman said no

Prepare for two blasts

Part of the reasoning was we only had so many bombs and warning the Russians

Most don’t know the bomb was started to get ahead of Germany who knew would eventually make one

Even the japs were working on a super weapon

They selected targets for population industry and lesser historical and cultural significance

“You can’t trust Hollywood to present a reasonable case in any matter anymore. They can be trusted to twist history and constantly piss on your leg saying it’s raining.”

Amen. Terrible morals, terrible values, terrible standards.

“The question amongst the shotcaller brass was about the use and the scientists had little to do with that as you know.”

Admiral Leahy is probably the most prominent of “the shotcaller brass” to criticize using the bombs, although there doesn’t seem to be evidence that he did so at the time.

William Leahy is not well remembered today but he was the most senior of all of the “5 star” military officers of WWII. Senior military advisor to FDR.

Leahy and George Marshall had moral reservations about intentionally blowing up civilians. But then the fire bombing of Tokyo that had gone on before was equally lethal.

The atomic bombs oddly provided Japan’s rulers with a reason that they could surrender and end the war without losing face. The bombs were so unearthly that they could be regarded as some force of nature like a typhoon or earthquake.

I don't know what it is. It's Hollywood's take on the issue. 3 hours. I'm sure they took liberties with the truth. Was his foolin' around with other women important? Perhaps a documentary would have been too boring for people's attention spans.

Maybe or maybe not, but it was the truth.

Any movie that lasts three hours is full of fillers and is beyond my ability to watch.

I'd go to sleep and miss the wonderful {American life saving} explosion at the end.

Did the japs bomb Pearl Harbor and kill hundreds of civilians, destroy multiple US Naval vessels and thousands of our young sailors, to get the USA into WW II ?

F'em.

We took a brilliant German, gave him money and power, and he {and his team} developed Little Man and FatBoy, and ended the war that would have seen hundreds of thousands {or millions} of additional people slaughtered.

The movie is a movie.

Did the Kinsey movie portray him as a secular saint? My recollection is that it didn’t attack him, but it showed him as a very troubled person with real problems, rather than as a hero or saint.

Teller and Fermi were more vital to the project.

Oppenheimer was the director at Los Alamos. He made the critical decisions, such has abandoning the "Thin Man" plutonium device and charging ahead on "Fat Man" and "Little Boy."

Fermi was the associate director and in charge of a division. Before starting, he built the first atomic reactor in Chicago. Teller worked under Fermi, in charge of theory and the "super." Teller spent most of his time on "super" which eventually became the H-Bomb seven years after Trinity.

It was a huge operation, Groves in charge of it all including the other labs at Hanford Oak Ridge. It was all compartmentalized. To say that Fermi was more vital is a mischaracterization. Of the three, you can say that Teller was least vital because of his preoccupation with "super," but his team did figure out implosion.

I thought it was very average and very long. And the nude scene conversation in their living room or wherever was totally unnecessary.

Churchill after WW2 was won.

I remember, at the turn of the century, that there were many polls of different things: best movie of the century, most admired person, etc.

There was one poll on the most influential person of the 20th century, and Winston Churchill came out on top.

A few years ago, people in Britain were rioting, and they tore down the statue of Churchill. I just shook my head at that. 20 years is all it took to go from "most influential" to having your statue torn down.

Oppenheimer's “other woman” was notorious for communist ties. And there is good reason to suspect that Oppenheimer intentionally provided information to a Soviet spy in order to help Stalin's A-bomb program.
