EXCLUSIVE: America's food delivery app RIP-OFF: How DoorDash, Uber Eats and GrubHub sneak junk fees of almost 25% onto your check - and that's BEFORE you have to tip!
Daily Mail ^ | 7/08/23 | Tilly Armstrong

Popular food delivery apps are charging customers sneak fees of up to 24 percent of the cost of their order - almost doubling the price in some cases when tips are added. DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats routinely add extra fees and taxes to food orders, but customers are left in the dark about what exactly the add-ons are for.

Inflated delivery app fees are another example of the US 'junk fee' economy - which makes it difficult for consumers to know exactly how much they will end up paying for a service. In February, the government pledged to crack down on hidden fees, which the White House estimates cost Americans around $65 billion every year.

To illustrate how much customers are being forced to fork out in fees for food delivery, DailyMail.com made the same order, costing $49.70, from a Joe & The Juice store in New York City on apps DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats. Then we compared the costs associated with each - before and after a 20 percent driver tip.

Delivery app Seamless, which operates in over 600 cities in the US, is now owned by Grubhub, while DoorDash bought up competitor Caviar in 2020. Fewer choices mean customers may have little choice but to pay out extra add-ons on their deliveries.

And the fees could rise even higher for customers in New York City, according to Grubhub, DoorDash and Uber Eats, if they are forced to implement a proposed minimum wage of $17.96-an-hour for delivery drivers due to be brought in later this month. The trio of tech giants are suing the city over the proposition, which they claim would force them to raise consumer fees to offset costs.

The last delivery for me was many decades ago. Are these the same folks who cuss at ya if something doesn't work out?

Tip as much as you feel is deserved, but tip only on the base cost of the food, before any fees or taxes.

They aren’t providing a service other than delivering your food. Tipping on the bottom line is free money for them.

I have never used any of these food delivery programs and have no intentions of ever using one. We are generally pretty picky on what and where we go to eat. The last thing I would ever do is let some youngin that can’t figure out which bathroom to use, deliver me prepared food.

Never use them. Don’t want some guy dragging his man tackle through my food and adding any extra salad dressing.

Typical idiocy - demanding higher wages yet expecting others to provide labor, ideas, and property for free. I’m pretty sure the people who use these services noticed that their Starbucks cost $16 to be delivered instead of $7 if they went through the drive through themselves.

So I went to the site to see what the price differential was, but entirely lost interest.

Did you guys know that Dennis Rodman got a face tattoo of his girlfriend Yella Yella?

I wish I wasn’t too lazy to post pictures.

If restaurant /delivery drivers make the minimum wage, then should the 15-20% tip come to an end? Or at least significantly reduced?

This seems to ge the case in other countries.

I used to be able to order from my local take-out places for a one or two-dollar delivery fee. Now, it’s astronomical, plus the tip.

I no longer do delivery at all.

I’ve used them a few times and have never had an issue.

It’s the same idea as pizza or Chinese delivery, but a wide range of restaurants are now included. A driver picks up the sealed bag from the restaurant and delivers it.

But, it’s these exact fees that are being discussed which make me pause. I’ll look for deals on the site that has no delivery fees for that day. Only then will I use it. The few times I’ve used it tho, I was happy for the service. It’s just not something you’d want to do, but occasionally.

We don’t do fast food, My wife cooks, and we never eat processed, heat and eat crap either and are very picky as to what restaurants we go to. Too many variable nowadays on who is preparing and how our food is prepared.

I found a sure-fire way to avoid those fees. You, too, can find it by drinking a cupful of my magic elixir every night before bed. Send me $19.95 and I’ll share my secret with you.

I only order when I’m desperate, too tired or sick to fix something for dinner. I know they rip us off, if they were decent they would get triple the business.
