The BMI is a joke- i can tell you from my own experience. That said its even a bigger joke to cancel because of racism.

So basically they are saying (without wanting to outright say it) that a large number of black people are obese, so that is normative, and we shouldn’t call them obese.

Of course they’re still going to get diabetes and heart disease and die, but at least they won’t get hurt feelings.

Yes, but everyone who is a bodybuilder knows that and doesn’t take BMI too seriously, and their doctors probably don’t either.

“That leads to poor quality care and specifically to Black women, who typically have higher levels of BMI compared to the average population,” said Sutton.

The AMA suggests tracking weight with other factors by measuring waist circumference, skin folds and resting metabolic health, among other factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure for a total picture of a patient’s health.

how soon before waist measurements and skin fold, better known as mud flaps for all the Spinal Tap fans, is deemed racist???

And really, why should they?

Not just due to complications, I mean. If a person is that obese, they’re likely to just wreck their hips and knees constantly and want more replacements. Let them pay for them themselves if they choose to live like that.

Your car insurance won’t buy you a new suspension every year if you decide you want to drive around every day carrying twice the load your vehicle is rated for.

BMI is racist. Of course. Did we expect anything else?

I’m going to have a long talk with my BMI tonight. I struggle to control it, but it seems to have a mind of its own and always does what it wants.

I think it's more a question of diet. Africans don't seem to have BMI issues.

But introduce them to black American culture and diet?

Whoomph!

While the “racist” component should not be part of the argument, the use of BMI is not a good idea.

One of the growing medical issues is the use of certain prescription drugs associated with significant weight loss.

One might say that weight loss and a lower BMI is great, especially for a US population that is over 30% overweight and nearly an additional 40% is obese. But the problem with the new miracle weight loss drugs when compared to traditional exercise and diet programs is the body composition at the end of the weight loss program.

The new drugs when compared to the old school approach tend to reduce mostly muscle mass. That means that you do end up weighing less and having a “lower BMI” and hence being considered by some as “healthier. However, the drugs have actually made you “fatter” by getting rid of muscle.

So yes, BMI is not the end all factor.

So it is now AMA’s idea that doctors should not mention BMI to their welfare queen patients who overly indulge with their food stamp cards.

100% agree with you on the obesity comment but the BMI chart is a joke. Its not racist- its a bit of a joke.

According to the BMI chart i am “overweight” at 6-1, 214LBS despite the fact people who look at me would say i’m thin, i trained for the Olympic decathlon for a decade and still workout 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day. Last time i had a body fat check i was around 17%- yet according to BMI i am overweight moving towards obese.

Yup- fry, fry, fry and fry their food. Then wash it down with a liter of Pepsi. I’ve seen this first hand. “We eat fish,” yet they fry it in an inch of cooking oil.

Should also add- the purchase of junk food with food stamps, SNAP, etc should not be allowed- but that would be deemed racist as well.

...the waist-height ratio is not accurate for anyone who has a lot of muscle tissue.

Absolutely correct. We had waivers for military personnel who didn't have an ounce of fat on them but were "obese" according to the Weight/BodyFat standards. The caliper wasn't too bad but the hydrostatic underwater weighing (Archimedes' Principle dunk tank test) was the most accurate if you could get one.

Well, it might be. Different races have developed/evolved differently over generations. It has to do with environment and how a body stores fat.

There are enough people in a population that docs should understand the norms per body type and make assessments from that. Doctors aren’t stupid. But they are used to their patients ignoring them…t

Stories like this—without context—will simply make African Americans angry at another group of people who are only there to help them.

BMI is a measurement that works for a lot of people. It’s one thing to look at but not the only. That’s the way most standards work. Long, long time ago when I was in ROTC in college I was borderline with my weight for the Army. I was too heavy for my height. I was a collegiate swimmer and played rugby. It was all muscle.

Just don’t get fat and stay that way.
