I believe (and I could be wrong) that USB has four wires, two of which carry power (+5V/Return), and two of which carry data (+Data/-Data). If you have a cable with just two wires for charging, I think you should be safe.

You can buy USB adapters that only allow power. Only way I can charge my iPhone using my company laptop.
