Yup. The wave of "privatization" that took place with contractors replacing government agencies or offices at DOD and many Federal agencies and in states created a tsunami of corruption. In many respects, with hindsight, it wasn't much different than what happened in post-Communist Eastern Europe, not only in the US but also the UK, France and Germany. And also both parties: look at how many Republican state officials feasted on the privatization of toll roads. Deregulation of airlines, telecoms, etc., just seems to have created new monopolies that managed to lobby to forestall any anti-trust activity.
So now we're stuck with the enormous dead weight of an administrative state working hand in hand with crony capitalist oligarchs.
