In Charles II’s day, and at other times, illegitimate children became Dukes and got massive estates. It’s hard to believe that kings had all that land to give away. I guess they got it from various rebels.
By the time of William IV, illegitimate offspring didn’t get honors or inheritances as big as that — he had too many of them — but did get a good start in their careers. Victorianism, the press, and parliamentary control of finances killed off all that.
