I read a Popular Mechanics article this morning about high resolution radar satellites that have documented 19,000 previously unknown ocean volcanoes (seamounts).
Less than 25% of the sea floor has been charted by sonar. The satellite scanning is so good, they may be able to chart the entire sea floor for seamounts.
Geologists believe there may be more than 50,000 total seamounts. They also believe that seamounts play a critical role in currents and in mixing warm surface water with cold sea floor water.
Most of the seamounts are believed to be inactive volcanoes.
