Well at least the Canadian Government did apologize for Bryan Adams.

What about Justin Bieber?

I am sure if you try hard enough you can work an anti Trump angle into this thread.

There is a whole story to how "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" got written and it all started when Lightfoot saw an article about the disaster in Newsweek magazine.

Some artistic license was taken with the lyrics and Gordon would catch grief over some of them over the years. As such, he started changing some of the lyrics in live performances over the years to emphasize the fact that the tragedy was not caused in any way by crew error (it was a rogue wave that did them in).

Anyway, a fascinating story about a fascinating song. When I find some time, I might make a full post about it.

Over the years, I've collected a number of cover versions of this song as well. This is one of those timeless songs that will always resonate.

IMO, one of the very best guitar ballads ever written. Oh, and my very first song I learned to sing and play was “Rocky Racoon”.

Love it. That song was a standard at our “guitars around the campfire” evenings back in our youthful days.

Nielson, Greene, Joni Mitchell to Neil Young (I’m ducking), to Randy Bachman, the Guess Who, The Band all have their places but I’m holding Gordon Lightfoot steady at number ONE!

As long as we are speaking of others of the same era with marginal health and getting up there in years, I will do a hat -tip for Kris Kristofferson. I knew a lot about him but after going to his wiki page I realized I had forgotten quite a bit.

If anyone wants to digress go look him up and you will be amazed as to the course of his life. Rhodes Scholar, Army Captain, Helicopter pilot, on and on.

I grew up on his music. My mom would put his albums on her record player as she cleaned the house every Sunday. Carried my love of his music all the way Into middle age. RIP Mr. Lightfoot………

He also pretty much discovered John Prine, which was a darn good discovery.

Here’s a little known Kristofferson song about his time in the Army. Pretty funny, includes a short story before he sings it.
