“WTF doesn’t know this already.”

And most of the diabetics do to. However the entry also said:

“sugar-sweetened drinks like soda or lemonade are consumed regularly over water or tea.”

Somehow I’m not real impressed with their choice of sugar replacement using drinks that contain caffeine. Caffeine, like in tea, causes a short-term decrease in insulin sensitivity (or an increase in insulin resistance). Caffeine intake can inhibit the body’s ability to regulate blood glucose levels, impairing the effectiveness of insulin and exacerbating diabetes. So the recommendation of caffeine containing drinks as a mainstay is not real bright.

Sugar spikes can be partly tolerated and semi controlled with insulin. The major thing that can control insulin resistance is exercise. However there are many that are unable to exercise and they can be a target for the problem.

Weight loss can also cut down on insulin resistance. No single diet has been proved to be the most effective. Some evidence suggests, though, that eating foods that are low in fat and high in carbohydrates can worsen insulin resistance. So much for high carb, low fat diets.

Insulin resistance is a major player in diabetic’s problems. There are no medications specifically approved to treat insulin resistance. Yet diabetes medications like metformin and thiazolidinediones, or TZDs, are insulin sensitizers that lower blood glucose, at least in part, by reducing insulin resistance. But that is more like a brief putting out a fire that quickly regains its strength and advances the side effects of diabetes: heart failure due to artery and heart hardening, the inability to move fluids in the body causing asthma, and other parts failures throughout the body as moisture literally downs the organs. And the advancement of diabetes, which cannot be stopped, worsens the problems.
