I work in a hospital in southern NJ. We have armed security officers.

In a hospital. Think about the incongruity of that.

A place of healing and a place most people might think would be the last place for a shooting.

The reason for the armed officers is a few years ago a man came into the building and went to the oncology floor(the cancer unit).

He shot his terminally ill wife and then turned the gun on himself.

I tend to think counter-clockwise.

To my way of thinking the hospital setting would probably be the most logical place to put police officers.

Why?

The amount of personal grief that overwhelms the average citizen dealing with loss of life, amputations/maiming caused by criminal acts (including Drunk Driving), negligence by the hospital doctors/nurses/administrators.

There are cases where husbands/wives/lovers will end a partner’s life if it’s terminal and they are in great pain, at the request of the dying/terminally ill partner...some opt for jailtime afterwards having made peace with themselves prior to the act...others opt for suicide because they fear jail or they simply wish not to live without the other partner.

I wonder if that was the case with the murder/suicide you mentioned. Did the terminal ill wife want to die and couldn’t do it herself because she was already in the hospital? Was he honoring her wishes at the only place he could? I don’t know and am grateful to not have to make a judgement.

Was it horrible? Surely, it weighs still on those who witnessed the aftermath or heard the shots.

It doesn’t however excuse the cowardice of the political elite or the cowardly citizenry who have something to gain, leaving people unable to defend themselves.

Life is messy. Evil and messy with the moments of Grace spread among those evil and messy events.
