Turkey Blocks Transit of Goods Sanctioned by EU, US to Russia

-Turkish government halted transit of sanctioned goods March 1
-Shippers say Turkish customs didn’t announce move in advance

Bloomberg News
March 10, 2023 at 7:29 AM EST
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-03-10/turkey-blocks-transit-of-goods-sanctioned-by-eu-us-to-russia

“Turkey abruptly stopped the transit of sanctioned goods to Russia this month as the European Union and the US pressure allies to support measures imposed over President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

The government ordered a halt to transit of such goods via Turkey from March 1 in compliance with sanctions, said a senior Turkish official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“The cargo clearance system in Turkey simply stopped working,” said Ekaterina Lazutkina, co-owner of Vendor Cargo, a Moscow-based door-to-door shipping, customs clearance and general freight company that works through Turkey. The customs system now blocks goods destined for Russia, she said.

Turkey has emerged as one of the havens for Russian wealth and a center for sourcing goods over the past year, benefiting from the personal relationship between Putin and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Turkey’s exports to Russia rose to $9.3 billion in 2022 from $5.8 billion a year earlier, illustrating the difficulties the US and EU have faced in mustering a unified front against Putin.

Turkey’s stance is linked to the EU expanding sanctions on Russia, said Mustafa Boyacioglu, the chief executive officer of Istanbul-based customs brokerage Subasi, confirming the blockage. He said there had been no formal announcement nor a transitory period, triggering confusion among companies.
Turkish Supplies

“We’re hearing that a solution could be to first ship the products to countries unrelated to sanctions, such as those in Central Asia,” Boyacioglu said by phone. “There shouldn’t be an issue with products that have been first imported to Turkey and then shipped to Russia, but we’re not even sure of that as the restrictions appear to be origin-based.”

Russian shippers still hope the situation will normalize, Valeriya Savenkova, commercial director at Moscow-based Transasia Logistics, which ships from Turkey, said by phone.

A NEW mutiny by Vladimir Putin’s ‘cannon fodder’ troops has seen mobilised men refusing go to the frontline as assault troops, and taunting their commander to jail them instead. The reservists say their officers openly call them “meat”, warning they have seen a wipeout of their comrades.
The men, from Kaliningrad, harangue their commander in a showdown meeting, and question the whole point of Putin’s war. They demand: “For who, for what [are we fighting]? “We are sent to certain death.”
This is the latest of multiple recent cases of Russian troops refusing to obey orders and fight as stormtroopers at the frontline for the pro-Kremlin forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic. Mobilised men sent to fight from many regions enlisted by Putin questioning why they are used in the vanguard while regular troops remain further back. By Will Stewart

Putin Dealt Double Blow as Two of His Closest Allies Turn on Him
NEWSWEEK
3/10/23

Turkey and Hungary, whose leaders had been among the few in Europe to keep an open door to Moscow after the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, seem to be starting to turn their backs on Russia.

This month, the Turkish government, which mediated peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow last year, abruptly halted the transit of sanctioned goods to Russia, after having received several warnings from the European Union and the United States about these products helping Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.

This week, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced his country will reassess its relationship with Russia. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine last February and the following sanctions imposed by the EU, Orbán has kept an ambivalent stance towards Moscow.

Orbán and his government were slow to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and repeatedly opposed the EU sanctions against Moscow and financial aid to Kyiv. As an energy crisis unfolded across Europe last year, Orbán consistently blamed higher costs on the sanctions imposed on Russia, calling for the EU to put an end to the measures.

Last month, Politico reported that Orbán told a group of foreign conservative figures that time was on Russia’s side in the war in Ukraine, calling the war-torn country “the land of nobody” and openly questioning its sovereignty.

But the latest apparent change of direction for Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Hungary’s Orbán shows that, as the war drags on for longer than anyone would have expected at its start, even Putin’s closest allies in Europe are being forced to reconsider what’s more convenient, strategically, for their countries.

While Turkey kept a good balance last year between keeping its ties with Russia without completely angering Europe and the U.S., this position now seems increasingly untenable. Turkey’s defiant resistance to the punitive measures imposed by the U.S. and the EU on Russia threatened to cost the country’s companies and banks to be punished for contravening sanctions, as Brian Nelson, the U.S. Treasury Department’s top sanctions official, made clear during meetings in Ankara and Istanbul last month.

Orbán too has until now played both sides, avoiding being straight-out anti-Ukrainian to keep enjoying the benefits of its EU and NATO membership while refusing to stop developing its ties with Moscow and abandoning its Russia-friendly stance.

But Orbán, talking about the need to reassess Hungary’s relationship with Russia during an economic forum in Budapest on Thursday, didn’t suggest cutting ties with Moscow completely.

“I understand the need to rebuild Russian-European relations after the war, but it’s far from realistic,” Orbán said. “That is why Hungary’s foreign and economic policy must carefully reflect on the type of relationship we can establish and maintain with Russia in the next 10-15 years.”

Finland’s Prime Minister Arrives in Kyiv
Friday, 10 March 2023
https://www.eurointegration.com.ua/eng/news/2023/03/10/7157744/

Prime Minister of Finland Sanna Marin is paying a visit to Kyiv.

“The Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, is in Kyiv on Friday,” TV2 channel reports.</p

She is to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Channel 24 also reports that Sanna Marin arrived at Mykhailo’s Golden-Domed Cathedral to say goodbye to Dmytro Kotsiubailo, the Hero of Ukraine who fell in Bakhmut.

This is already the second visit of the Prime Minister of Finland to Kyiv.

On Friday morning, it became known that Finland would allocate to Ukraine additional €29 million in humanitarian aid (Ukr) and development cooperation support.

The €29 million provided is part of additional funding of €70 million that the government had allocated to help Ukraine in 2022.

In addition, €37 million have been reserved for 2023 to back Ukraine through development cooperation. Thus, Ukraine will become Finland’s largest partner state in development cooperation.

The dude (Dnys Davydov) is a Ukrainian citizen living abroad, and a commercial pilot. He actually tries to cover the events he has access to with a relatively fair hand (yes, he tries to be optimistic) - and has many times admitted failure and errors of the Ukrainian government and military. He covered the recent corruption charges and the rooting out of several government officials who were caught.

And he has issued formal retractions/apologies when he has gotten stuff wrong. That’s more than I’ve seen from pretty much any source on any side of the war.

Ukrainian Armed Forces repel Russian attacks on Bakmut and Ivankivske – General Staff report
Tetiana Lozovenko — Friday, 10 March 2023, 18:55
16892
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/03/10/7392902/

[Over the past day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled the attacks of the occupiers on the city of Bakhmut and the village of Ivankivske nearby; the hospitals in occupied Berdiansk are full of wounded Russians.]

Details: During the day, the Air Force of the Defence Forces of Ukraine carried out five strikes on clusters of Russian personnel and equipment, as well as one strike on the position of occupiers’ anti-aircraft missile systems. Units of Rocket Forces and Artillery hit three clusters of Russian manpower.

Throughout the day, the Russian aggressors carried out 23 air strikes and 4 missile strikes on the cities of Kostiantynivka and Sloviansk in Donetsk Oblast. Civilians have been injured and civilian infrastructure and residential buildings damaged. In addition, the occupiers fired 23 times from multiple-launch rocket systems.

The Russians do not cease their attempts to enter the administrative border of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. The main efforts are focused on conducting offensive operations on the Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Marinka, and Shakhtarsk fronts.

On the Volyn, Polissia, Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna fronts, the situation has not changed significantly. During the day, the Russians carried out mortar and artillery shelling of Yeline in Chernihiv Oblast, Znob-Novhorodske, Seredyna-Buda and Atynske in Sumy Oblast and Ambarne, Kamianka, Novomlynsk, Dvorichna and Zapadne in Kharkiv Oblast.

On the Lyman front, the Russians are trying to break through the defence of Ukrainian troops. Artillery shelling was recorded, in particular, near Hrianykivka, Kyslivka, Krokhmalne and Berestove in Kharkiv Oblast, Chervonopopivka and Bilohorivka in Luhansk Oblast, as well as Dibrova, Spirne, Rozdolivka and Yahidne in Donetsk Oblast.

On the Bakhmut front, the occupiers did not cease their advances; Ukrainian defenders repelled numerous attacks in the areas of the settlements of Ivanivske and Bakhmut. The settlements of Vasiukivka, Zaliznianske, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Bohdanivka, Hryhorivka, Bila Hora, Druzhba and Zalizne in Donetsk Oblast were shelled.

On the Avdiivka, Marinka and Shakhtarsk fronts, the Russians failed to advance in the areas of Kamianka, Avdiivka, Sieverne, Vodiane, Pervomaiske, Nevelske, Krasnohorivka, Marinka and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk Oblast. The settlements of Krasnohorivka, Kamianka, Avdiivka, Vodiane, Marinka, Heorhiivka, Novomykhailivka and Vuhledar were shelled. The Russian occupiers also dropped aerosol grenades of the K-51 type in the area of Sieverne, Vodiane, and Nevelske.

On the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson fronts, the Russians conducted defensive operations. The areas of Malynivka, Huliaipole, Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, Huliaipilske, Kamianske and Zaporizke in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, as well as Havrylivka, Dudchany, Kherson, Beryslav, Vesele, Antonivka, Berehove and Veletenske in Kherson Oblast were shelled.

In local occupation administrations and houses of culture in the settlements of Yasynuvata, Zhdanivka, Khartsyzk, Amvrosiivka of the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk Oblast, the so-called “authority” organised the handing over of party tickets of the Russian political party Edinaya Rossiya [United Russia – ed.] to local collaborators.

The Russians continue to suffer losses. As a result of attacks on the city of Berdiansk, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, local medical facilities are overflowing with wounded Russian occupiers. In particular, all female patients were discharged from the gynaecological ward and 30 wounded Russians were admitted. Eighty seriously wounded invaders were placed in the surgical and ENT departments.

There is a pretty good video embedded in this article, from the Hindustan Times. I've been trying to read it, Al Jazerra and other media published by countries not directly involved in the conflict.

The Ukrainian sources are the most ridiculous, as you'd expect. (For instnace the "Ukrainian Pravda" article posted just above really sounds like something you'd expect from a Soviet-relic named "Pravda")

The linked video is also on YouTube, and mostly features Ukrainian POV video footage.

Putin’s forces unleash 102 attacks on Bakhmut in 24 hours | No let-up in Russia's battle

Over 100 attacks in just 24 hours, this is the reality at the frontline in Bakhmut, where Russian and Ukrainian troops have refused any let-up for the prestige prize. Ukraine claimed that it repelled all Russian attacks in the past day. On the other hand, Russia claimed that Ukraine was unsuccessful in launching counter-attacks in Bakhmut, leading its forces to advance. Remember, Russia's Wagner Group now controls the eastern part of the mining city in Donetsk region and has circled it on the North and the South. Watch this video to find out what is happening in the 'meat-grinder'.

I support your freedom of thought & expression. However, of course totally not in agreement with your opinion.

Thanks, I appreciate that, and I too support those things.

My criticism was not of the source material but the title, structure and links of the piece. I realize that Telegraph is hard to link to, I've tried to do it before.

You have lots of nicely formatted comments, but the title and OP Article text, it seems like you just gave up and posted a pastebomb without even reviewing it, which is unlike your normally well-formated posts.

That is what I was criticizing, not the source material. Credit to anyone on-the-ground in Ukraine or the liberated territories who are trying to report on this. I's a dangerous and tough job.
