But a top executive of the Iditarod says sponsors come and go and the future of the race is not threatened. Several big-name national sponsors have walked away from the annual Alaska sled dog race in recent years, while other local sponsors and a handful of national companies remain as partners.

Every year they do this.

The number of mushers are down this year do to high price of dog food and fuel prices to haul it out to check points. PETA is is just a pain and does not help animals.

Enjoy watching the Iditrod while eating several steaks at your local Golden Corral.

Anyone who has ever owned a Siberian Husky or other Arctic breed knows how much they LOVE the cold and that they also LOVE to run and pull things. If PETA is concerned about sled dogs running and pulling sleds in the cold, then they know nothing about these amazing dogs.

Well they sure as heck don't make good guard dogs, unless they can drown someone by licking their face.

Ha Ha! That’s for sure. They’re more likely to show the burglar around the house. I’ve owned Huskies and it’s so funny how their intense looks can intimidate people when their nature is exactly the opposite. Friendliest dogs I’ve ever seen. Siberians are my favorite dog breed by far. If you’ve never seen it, Eight Below is a great movie (and a true story). Really shows how majestic these dogs are.

Yep, very happy with mine, he lived to over 16. Only complaint is the shedding :)

Ain’t that the truth. My sister had one and he would pull us kids around in a modified baby carriage with a choker collar.

Had a Siberian. Used to let her pull me on cross country skis. Her favorite food was salmon heads after a good catch.
Do not approach a feeding husky. You will not have a good day. Central Ca. coast is hot in the summer. She’d sleep a lot but after a shave, she’d look up and smile.

The shedding is epic. The fluffy undercoat hairs float in the air and get everywhere. Definitely have to keep plenty of lint rollers handy. The trade off is that Huskies are very clean and don’t smell. They groom themselves like cats.

I always wondered if you could make sweaters out of their hair, because they certainly provide an abundance of the raw material.

I haven’t had a husky that was territorial over their food, but the one we had when I was a kid would defend a rawhide bone to the death. In general, he was the typical happy-go-lucky Husky, but every Christmas one of the things he got as a present was a gigantic rawhide bone. Once he got hold of that thing he turned into a different dog and would growl at anyone who came near it.

My funniest food story with him was how when we had steak I would feed him some of it, a small piece at a time. I would take a piece of his dry dog food and a piece of steak, keeping each in my closed hand so he couldn’t see them. I would toss him a piece of steak, which he would immediately catch and devour. I would keep tossing him bites of steak and then would try to fool him by unexpectedly tossing him a piece of dog food. In the split second that the dog food was suspended in air between my hand and his mouth he would somehow figure out that it wasn’t steak and would close his mouth and let it bounce off his nose. It was hilarious. I also saw him take dry dog food between his teeth and swing his head and let it fly, trying to hit grasshoppers in the back yard with it. The first time I thought it was just a coincidence, but I saw him do it many times after that, and it was obvious what he was doing.

And of course he had the typical Husky master escape artist skills. They’re very smart dogs.

i will bet not a single one of these PeTA tyrants has EVER dealt with a working breed dog. Especially Huskies and Malamutes. The dogs LOVE this stuff.

Trade rawhide for fish. Guarantee you’ll find a difference.
Big time.

As an owner of several Shetland Sheepdogs (in the past), I can relate to shedding dogs. Spring was always the worst. I was vacuuming every day -- big clumps of fluffy undercoat hair.

I had a wonderful Corgi for (almost) 14 years. He was a wonderful companion and pet -- loved that dog and still miss him. He shed hair all year round. Didn't care -- his "aroos" (a distinctive sound that Corgi's make), and his lovely personality were just wonderful.
