Next Bond Film Will be ‘Complete Re-invention’ but Won’t Shoot for ‘at Least Two Years

The 26th official James Bond film is unlikely to be in cinemas before 2025, according to the series’ producer, Barbara Broccoli.

Speaking at a dinner to honor Broccoli and her half-brother Michael G Wilson after the presentation of their BFI Fellowships, the gatekeeper of all things 007 (and daughter of Cubby Broccoli) said they had not yet cast the actor who will replace Daniel Craig in the tux.

“Nobody’s in the running,” she said in a speech first reported by Deadline. “We’re working out where to go with him, we’re talking that through. There isn’t a script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how we’re going to approach the next film because, really, it’s a reinvention of Bond. We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time. I’d say that filming is at least two years away.”Craig departed the series after five films, bowing out with last year’s No Time to Die. That film concluded Craig’s run with a finality unusual for the film, something which fueled speculation over the likely future of the franchise, with some suspecting the films would have to return to Bond’s childhood or early spy years for more stories.

The sale of studio MGM to Amazon has also meant the intellectual property rights over Ian Fleming’s character exert a looser grip than in previous years. Broccoli and Wilson are producing a new reality series, 007’s Road to a Million, which will be Amazon Prime Video’s debut TV show.

Broccoli has previously confirmed that the new Bond will be male, after calls for the character to undergo a Doctor Who-style reinvention. Key runners and riders remain Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page and Richard Madden..........

I like Idris Elbe and have for a while. A lot of women like the guy from Bridgerton. Hardy is aways interesting. Superman is too pretty. Remember this is not the producer's list it is speculation from the writer of the article. Is it too early to start camping outside the box office. Ir do we have box offices anymore?

Barbara seems intent on killing the franchise.

Don't get your hopes up. The next James Bond will be a homo/tranny. Take it to the bank.

Idris said he isn’t going to play Bond, ever.

Idris said this week that he had no desire to play the character as he “is” Luther and wants to do those movies.

I’d like Tom Hardy myself.

My pet peeve. The Brocollis control the use of Bond, except for Casino Royale and Thunderball. So when they make a movie they call it “official 25” etc. But that leave out the farcical Casino Royale with Niven and Sellers and the Connery starring Never Say never. So there are 27 Bond films in the can, not 25 and the next one will be 28 no matter who produces it.

Media: stop letting the Brocollis miscount the number of movies.

Also, in 1954 Casino Royale appeared as a live play on American TV and starred Barry Nelson and Peter Lorre.

They’re still making these? What for, the movies have sucked since the Connery/Moore era ended.

60’s-it was great. Even amongst the hippie culture. It’s not like a cult following.

Posted this awhile back on another Bond thread. I think this could be a great "re-invention," but without "re-inventing" at all, really.

I would love to see a new Bond series start in the mid-1950s and work its way up to the “Swingin’ ‘60s,” as Fleming’s books did. Setting the series in that period would be a bonanza for creative writing, production design, photography, costuming, you name it. The actors would probably love playing in a “period piece” as well.

It would be fun to see the development and return of some of Q’s gadgets (Little Nellie, anyone? The original Aston Martin DB5?), and the evolution of continuing characters like M and Moneypenny. The occasional cameo appearance of a young Queen Elizabeth and / or Prince Phillip would be, as they say, smashing. If handled well, with good stories and kinetic action, I think audiences would really flock to something like this.

A “period” series like that sets up so many possibilities. Even tossed-off, offhand dialogue could be loads of fun. I could picture, for example, Bond and Felix Leiter having cocktails in Jamaica:

FELIX: Did you see that cable this morning? I had to laugh, it was so unbelievable.
BOND: I missed it. I had a rather late night.
FELIX: What else is new? It concerned the murder of Hans Schmid. You know of him?
BOND: An agent with the Gehlen Organization ... Really a detestable fellow. I can’t say I’m surprised someone thought he might be worth a bullet.
FELIX: (Leaning in) Maybe this might surprise you, James. He was beheaded ...
BOND: That does seem a touch excessive.
FELIX: ... by a bowler, with a razor-sharp brim.
BOND: (Actually surprised) Well. That is a new one. I wonder if Q might make one in a Harris Tweed?

As I say, the possibilities seem really endless. :)

Loved the first ones and then was shocked to notice I had seen one since Brosnan so have missed an era.

I think you’re right.

Bond will come in to see Moneypenny and say “I’m now a woman.” and Moneypenny will say “I’m now a man.”

It worked for "Mad Men".
