People with relatively high levels of lipids in their blood are less likely to develop allergic conditions such as eczema and asthma. These lipids cause genes that play a key role in allergic reactions to be less active.
"We already knew that lipids in our blood, such as triglycerides and cholesterol, can influence the behavior of immune cells," says Professor Bas Heijmans. "We have now shown that these lipids dampen the activity of genes that play a key role in allergies." As a result, allergic reactions are less likely to occur.
The researchers began by mapping which genes are active in the immune cells of over 3,200 people. "This turned out to be more than 17,000 genes," says Koen Dekkers, the first author of the study. "Then, step by step, we figured out exactly which genes are affected by lipids in the blood, leading us to a group of genes that trigger allergic reactions."
Using a cutting-edge analysis method that involved combining the blood levels of lipids, the activity of genes and known genetic differences between people, the researchers were able to show that this correlation is causal.
An allergic reaction is an exaggerated response by the immune system to a harmless substance. Take, for instance, how pollen can cause hay fever. The researchers found that lipids mainly affect genes active in basophils. These are immune cells that, among other things, produce histamine and are crucial in triggering an allergic reaction.
Triglycerides in particular have an effect on these basophils, the researchers discovered. Blood triglyceride levels are determined partly by our DNA, but mainly by our diet. "And that is very interesting, of course," says Heijmans. "This could mean that patients with severe allergic reactions might benefit from extra triglycerides, or more precisely, the fatty acids that make up triglycerides."

Trigiycerides increase blood viscosity.
There are more heart attacks and strokes among people with high blood viscosity.
It seems to me the authors didn’t test their idea by causing an increase in triglycerides in people with allergies and seeing if it reduced their allergies. So, it’s a completely worthless article.
Unfortunately high levels of this cause other things that aren’t so good.
What are good sources of triglycerides?
Sadly, carbs.
This study is interesting. Perhaps this can be taken farther. I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Maybe in the future they can prove it is caused by my exposure to allergins that cause my body to produce huge amounts of lipids to fight the allergin autoimmune reaction??hmm???
Ive think I have noticed that when i start my bp lowering medication my asthma SEEMS to get worse, requiring more inhaler use
How does that work?
I have lots of allergies but never heard that.
IDK. Just midnight hypothesizin’. :)
It sure would be nice if my body did something positive n regard to my allergies instead of against it.
Thank you “doctor” for your expert advice...😂🥸

Sometimes a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine can help that. They use herbs to alter GI bacteria, inflammation, and metabolism, using a complex theory they came up with over 6,000 years. They see things like that not as a disease or problem, but as a symptom of one of maybe 50 disharmonies of the body. If they fix the disharmony the symptom goes away.
I would look for local TCM docs who use herbs and acupuncture, but especially herbs for that, and check google reviews to find a good one people rave about.
Hey! Thank you very much!
What credentials does one look for in an credible practitioner of TCM?
A long time ago I was sick enough some nights I wondered how much longer I had. Someone pointed me to a TCM doc, and though I had no idea what that was, in two months I felt 15 years younger, and bullet proof. It was mind blowing. In my case, my stiff knees which I could no longer squat with, were not even on my radar as a problem, but it turned out he cured the problem which I thought would do me in, and my knees became like I was 20 again. I now see the disharmony I had lists knee pain as one of those symptoms which spin off from it.
Years later I tore up the muscles in my leg. A big black bruise made the skin over it look like a seal’s. I did martial arts so I knew injuries, and I would have been months coming back from it, if I could build it back up enough ever. I thought of the TCM doc, and decided he could not hurt, and in two weeks I was lifting weights with the leg like nothing happened, just off herbs and acupuncture. Don’t ask me how, the skin was still satiny black all over the injury.
It changed my life, and the way I viewed life, and I enjoy seeing that happen to others now by passing it forward. I kind of wish I knew all this when I was graduating college so I could spend a couple more years studying TCM, but I am grateful just to have found out about it.
So no thank you needed.
