Breast MRI effective at detecting cancer in dense breasts, finds study

Compared to other common supplemental screening methods, breast MRI was superior at detecting breast cancer in women with dense breasts, according to a study.

Roughly 47% of women have dense breasts, which is an independent risk factor of breast cancer.

While screening mammography effectively detects up to 98% of cancer in fatty breasts, breast cancer is more easily missed in dense breasts.

"Breast cancer masses appear white on a mammogram, and dense tissue also appears white, which makes finding breast cancers within dense breast tissue harder for radiologists," said Vivianne Freitas, M.D., M.Sc.

The four most common supplemental imaging tests are hand-held breast ultrasound, automated breast ultrasound, digital breast tomosynthesis and breast MRI.

To measure which screening method was the most beneficial to women with dense breasts, researchers conducted a meta-analysis on 22 studies.

Risk assessment models have been used to identify patients with an average and intermediate risk of developing breast cancer. Women with an estimated lifetime risk of 12 to 13% of developing breast cancer are considered average risk.

Meta-analysis showed that of the 132,166 patients with dense breasts, a total of 541 breast cancers that were initially missed on mammography were detected with supplemental screening methods. Breast MRI was the superior screening method and was capable of detecting even the smallest of cancers. Excluding MRI, there was not a significant difference between the other supplemental screening methods.

"MRI is far superior in terms of cancer detection compared to hand-held ultrasound, automated ultrasound and digital breast tomosynthesis," Dr. Freitas said. "Our results about the role of MRI in supplementary screening will allow stakeholders to guide healthcare policies in this setting and direct further research."

MRI is not a common way to do this, but you can get a preventative MRI from many places, but insurance won’t cover them.

Do note it is possible to reverse dense breast tissue with iodine therapy. A close relative did that and it no longer requires higher amounts of iodine. I’ll put information in the next post on that.

I have to get breast mri’s because I am very high risk due to both of my sisters being breast cancer survivors. It is the only medical test that I have to get doc to give me a xanax before doing it...lol I am not normally claustrophobic, but the way they position you on this one freaks me out...and you stay in that position for up to 45 min. I get 1 per year (this yr will be my 3rd) and so far no insurance troubles...and thankfully no cancer yet!

By “dense,” do they mean big?

A patient cured is a customer/subscription lost. If you get the bad word, don’t immediately accept the “recommendation” brainwashed in to “doctors” by the Rockefeller petroleum legacy.

No. Dense is very fibrous breasts with not a lot of fat. Makes it hard to find the cancer nodules.

I have this done when I get my Mammogram every two years. I spring for the extra $10, myself. My local hospital has this feature right on their machine, so it’s no different than a regular Mammogram. The VA doesn’t have the equipment needed for we females (which seems insane!) so they allow us to go local for this.

Seems like we need a Fundraiser for the VA. I’m sure one machine is 100’s of thousands of dollars - and then an expensive trained tech to go with it! But, we’re just female Vets. Who cares? *SMIRK*

Get these done, Ladies! This is one thing you should not ignore when it comes to your health!

I’ve had a couple of MRI’s for other things, and I don’t like them at all. I barely made it through the last one. I decided the same thing as you, that next time I will take some kind of tranquilizer.
