Simple nasal spray shown to significantly reduce snoring and breathing difficulties in children (Saline spray equal to steroids and reduced tonsillectomies by 50%)
Medical Xpress / Murdoch Children's Research Institute / JAMA Pediatrics ^ | Jan. 17, 2023 | Alice Baker et al

A simple nasal spray significantly reduced snoring and breathing difficulties in children and halved the number needing to have their tonsils removed, according to a new study.

The research found a saline (salt water) nasal spray was just as effective as an anti-inflammatory steroid nasal spray at easing sleep disordered breathing in children after six weeks of treatment.

The findings stated both nasal sprays cleared symptoms while asleep in about 40 percent of cases and those assessed by a surgeon as needing their tonsils and/or adenoids removed was reduced by half. The randomized-controlled "MIST" trial of the sprays involved 276 children, aged 3-12 years.

Tonsillectomy is the most common pediatric elective surgery for children.

Dr. Alice Baker said children typically waited more than a year in the public system for surgery to remove tonsils and adenoids, prompting a need to look for an alternative treatment for sleep disordered breathing. Some children may also be having their tonsils and adenoids out unnecessarily, she said.

"Nasal sprays work by cleaning the nose and/or reducing inflammation not just in the nose but all the way down the back of the throat to the adenoids and tonsillar tissue to alleviate the symptoms," Dr. Baker said.

Snoring and breathing difficulties during sleep affect about 12 percent of children and can cause significant long-term issues impacting cognitive function, behavior and cardiovascular health.

Professor Kirsten Perrett said the study found a substantial number of children with sleep disordered breathing could initially be managed by their GP and may not require referral to specialist services as currently recommended.

I would have liked my parents and doctor to have known this before I had mine out, as a young child.

In about 1953 I had mine removed. My mom tells me that there were about 20 kids my age in the recovery room(s). Apparently, various medical groups strongly supported the surgery. It was a fad!

My son who was born in 1996 had his tonsils out and his adenoids cauterized twice. He had so many ear infections, hs ENT recommended the tonsil removal. His GP however was dead set against it. After bumping him full of antibiotics, numerous sets of tubes, we went with the ENT recommendation. Never had another ear infection after that.

This is great news. I have seasonal allergies, and I began using a saline nasal rinse several years ago whenever I would feel some sinus congestion coming on. Works like a charm.

More recently, however, I have begun using it prophylactically just about every day after I brush my teeth in the morning.

Not much profit in a simple saline nasal spray.
I’m waiting for the FDA to say that saline sprays cause cancer.

I was four when I had my tonsils out. I still remember images of that nightmarish experience.

I use hypertonic saline nasal spray for congestion/stuffiness. Shrinks the swollen membranes by sucking the water out of them. I swear by it.

Salt just jumped to $100 per pound

Bottled water was already at $5 a bottle

This is very interesting on the anti-snoring front. I assume that it would work for adults. The biggest question is how I can get my wife to do this since she “doesn’t snore.” Maybe “I’ll do it if you will” could work.

Eh?

I thought it was because they figured out tonsils were a part of your immune system.

“In about 1953 I had mine removed. “

Right about that time for me. Mama was driving me home and we got about two blocks when I barfed all over the backseat. This was in July in Nashville. No air conditioning in the car (or at home).

You can make it, yourself, but I’d suggest purified water.

You can get nasal squeeze bottles or use an empty one that is refillable.

Neti pot mixes are a quick approach, and they are at Walmart.

I’m waiting for the FDA to say that saline sprays cause cancer.

Nah, they'll say heart cardiac issues. Gives them a cover story for the surprising number of cardiac issues suddenly happening for no reason.

I’ve done full nasal saline irrigation when I’ve had a head cold for a long time, more than a decade now. Bought one of the powered rinse things, not just a Neto pot or equivalent. I am a big believer in that use.

What do you do daily? A spray, or a full rinse? If a spray, what are you using, specifically?

This is similar to the machine I have.

So more like a Neti pot rinse, and not just a spray, correct?
