Following his controversial performance officiating Argentina’s quarterfinal win over the Netherlands on Friday, Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz was reportedly removed from the 2022 World Cup and will not work any of the tournament’s remaining four games. The Spanish referee, who works in Spain’s La Liga, has already left Qatar, according to Spanish outlet COPE.
The VAR (video assistant replay) referees were not punished, however, and will be given the options to work in the remaining matches.
Both teams were enraged with Lahoz throughout the match, which saw Argentina blow a late 2-0 lead before rallying to win in penalties. Lahoz handed out 18 yellow cards and one red card in the match, including a World Cup record of 15 players on the field to receive a card. Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries was sent off during penalties. The match also had 10 minutes of added time in regulation, during which the Netherlands scored to tie the game and send it to extra time.

Dude is a hot head...18 cards. I thought it was kind of funny in a way.
Did his calls tend to favor Argentina? If so that would make sense.
“Did his calls tend to favor Argentina?”
If you’re from Holland, yes.
If you’re from Argentina, no.
Only for games remaining... If he was not going to work either of the semifinals or the final, what difference does it make to let him go?
Further, if he gave out 18 yellow cards, so what? Maybe they were all deserved. But IMHO, in soccer in general there’s a lot of flopping going on in games. Sometimes there’s a penalty called where you cannot even see the contact. Other times there’s a flagrant foul and nothing is called.
If you are from America, it never happened.
Holland is only part of the Netherlands.
It sounds as if you are technically correct but it’s socially accepted as interchangeable.
This article didn’t clarify anything for me really.

Unrelated, but your “Atlanta Nurses” story doesn’t have a post#1. So no replies possible. FYI
Yes,I assumed that. But how would an unbiased observer see it?
There is a lot of flopping, and it makes me mad, but they embellish injuries in many sports, especially at the professional level. As you said, sometimes there’s a foul called, when the contact has been minor or even legal. I don’t know if I’ve ever watched a game where I agreed with every call a referee or official has made. Everyone differs. We each have our own opinions about the plays and what is right.
It seemed pretty even to me.
Way too many cards though, and the dude is definitely a temper guy.
What?
What?
Dutch people seem to get mad about it.
FWIW the Atlanta excerpt beneath the headline doesn’t match either the headline or the story inside.
I was there for weeks in 1997 with Dutch citizens and they didn’t say anything to me.
Though I guess I probably just said “here” more than “Holland”...
I also drank a lot on that trip.
If I'm the referee, I would be extremely aggressive and hand out yellow cards to crack down on the "flopping". So you should see normal flow of game return to soccer, eventually. There's no reason to flop on the soccer field. But that's just me.
Just wait until today. It will be the most tilted game in history.
Morocco is:
The first African country in the finals.
The first Arab country.
The first Muslim country.
The former colony of France.
And they are playing in an Arab Muslim country.
Gee, what could go wrong?
What does he think he is? An NFL ref?
