When the 2022 World Cup made its debut on Sunday, it kicked off one of the most significant in-game uses of technology in sports history.
All tournament long, match balls will contain a sensor that collects spatial positioning data in real time — the first World Cup to employ such a ball-tracking mechanism. This, combined with existing optical tracking tools, will make VAR (video assistant referees) and programs like offside reviews more accurate and streamlined than they’ve ever been. Combining these two forms of tracking has long been a holy grail of sorts in technology circles, and FIFA’s use of the ball sensor in particular will serve as a highly public test case over the next four weeks.

"One life, live it".
Why waste it watching other folks playing games?
I love watching my favorite baseball team play. It’s like a soap opera. Tge game itself is meditative. I love the rules. It’s American. It reminds me of family. My father m
Soccer. No
Would rather stare at a yardstick. Just a yardstick.
You are not alone.
Seems to me, the Europeans take Soccer far more seriously than the typical American takes football or basketball.
It is a religion to most of them. The majority still rise and perish vicariously with their teams. Maybe because they still think like citizens of small town vs a huge and sprawling continent like the USA. I’m not a Sport’s viewer, for the most part and never have been. To each his own diversion.
Yep. But then again, every sport is over rated and boring when compared to the greatest sport of all - women’s roller derby.
like watching paint dry
Can’t understand the interest in soccer It bores the crap out of me.
As to the game of soccer, I agree. The tracking technology though has the potential to make the game more honest by making referee calls more accurate and fair. That is a major problem in almost all sports, but especially so in soccer and basketball. Both sports have had major cheating scandals that relied on game fixing by corrupt referees. Even player cheating through lack of effort may eventually be detectable.
Fox News is beating the world cup like a mule 7x24. Good thing there’s no news to report on.
I think soccer would be more interesting if the participants were required to have their arms surgically amputated before they are eligible to participate.
Never watched a soccer game and don’t plan on changing that record.
Kickball is for kids.
No
Very rarely do i watch any sports. Very rarely.
And usually its been mens tennis for very select players. I play and omce in awhile there’s a really good quarter, semi or finals match.
It could be worse. We could be getting the full Mickey Mouse treatment, courtesy of ABC, ESPN and all the other little mouselets that are part of the Disney conglomerate.
The more I see them, the more I wish that Walt Disney had forced the current owners to lose the Disney name on his demise. What passes for “House of Mouse” today is nothing whatsoever like what it was when I was a kid.
But I digress... This thread is supposed to be about a bunch of people in short pants running around a 110 x 70 yard patch of grass attempting to kick a ball into a big net. A fairly boring topic for those of us who are soccer-averse.
