Philadelphia Home Depot workers vote to reject unionization

Home Depot workers in Philadelphia rejected the first store-wide labor union at the world’s largest home improvement retailer Saturday night, a loss for a fledgling movement to organize at major U.S. companies.

Workers voted 165 to 51 against forming a union representing 274 employees at the store, WHYY-FM reported.

The National Labor Relations Board oversaw the voting. A board spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request from The Associated Press for information about the vote.

The defeat for the organizers, who sought to join Home Depot Workers United, could discourage activist workers who have successfully formed the first unions at big chains, including Amazon, Starbucks, Trader Joe’s and Apple, but have since suffered setbacks in getting collective bargaining off the ground or organizing more unions. […]

Home Depot firmly opposes unionization, saying it has an open door policy allowing employees to bring concerns directly to managers. …

NICE! good for them...I’ve been in two unions and to be honest I enjoy being independent and working because of my own merits and being a value to whoever hires me. Trade unions are good though..good schooling during apprenticeship.

I was asked to join a union when working a summer job during college. I said no. I got paid like 20 cents less than the union stooges but I was only making like $4 bucks an hour anyway so I did not care. What was so telling though was how nasty the unions stooges were towards me because they know who is and who is not union. Unions attract the nastiest human among us.

It’s the 21st century and unions are basically dead. Only 7% of the workforce is in a union. The numbers go down every year.

Private directory unions are dead.

Unfortunately, thanks to JFK, public sector unions are still with us.

Adding in the 3.7 million federal civilian employees, in 2010 8.4 million government workers were represented by unions,[27] including 31% of federal workers, 35% of state workers and 46% of local workers.[28]

It's a problem but not a hill to die on.

And most of that 7% is federal or state enforced government employee unions since they do not have a Right to Work law.

This site has UDS Union Derangement Syndrome. I don’t like unions but I don’t wast my energy on a non problem from the mid 20th century.

Workers don’t want to be picking up the slack for the slackers the union would engender.

“Trade unions are good though..good schooling during apprenticeship.”

Totally agree. I have friends back east who are with the carpenters union. Never had an issue, benefits are great and he always had work.

Municipal and government unions need to be euthanized. You get your benefits, your pay, you have a job and the only difference is if you do a good job you get a raise and if you do a poor job you get canned.
