Thousands of Americans have fallen victim to stalkware planted on their smartphones by someone they know - and an Android app is collecting and storing their personal information.

TechCrunch obtained leaked data from the app, TheTruthSpy, that has a database teeming with personal information like call logs, text messages, location data and passwords from users across the US.

TheTruthSpy, which launched in 2019, markets itself as a way for people to surreptitiously monitor the communications of their spouses.

Mapping software revealed the app captured 278,861 location data points from Americans over the course of six weeks - a total of 608,966 worldwide.

The database was also held 1.2 million text messages and 4.42 million call logs, which included the duration of calls and the name and phone numbers of contacts.

TheTruthSpy has been the center of several data dumps, including one in June when the app was found to expose images of children and other personal photos from victims’ personal devices.

My phone constantly nags me to eat more celery.

Would that be considered "stalkware"?

Thousands...that isn’t bad at all really. More people cheated in the 2020 election than have this spy app installed.

People are upset that spyware they installed on their phones is spying on them too?

Seriously, where did they think the data was going?

I’ve been going old school more and more; just leaving the thing home when going somewhere.

I've been watching British crime documentaries. Once they have a suspect, there are so many cameras around the country that police can track them by recordings. One guy thought he was smarter by having gf persuade the victim to go to a remote area where he was beaten to death. Murderer forgot he was wearing a Fitbit. The cops had every movement, exact location and time, minute by minute.

Maybe that's ok for crime, but what about you just happen not to agree with your police state?

We used to go everywhere without a phone. Then we got comfortable with one along that could only be a phone. But these things are waaaay too ‘smart’ now.

At night wifee and I often leave one off in another room, sometimes we turn both off at night. Need to get a couple of those rf sleeves I guess.

I’m not familiar with any cnc machines newer than the mid 90s, when I was working at a steel fab shop. The current ones probably read your cards rf chips in your wallet while you’re milling a piece of steel, and take your bp, pulse, and read your mind....
