I’m surprised the State isn’t seizing the estate.
I don’t know about IL, but Texas basically doesn’t have an escheat statute for intestate estates. You just keep looking.
Some years ago my neighbor got what he thought was a suspicious letter in the mail - basically saying a very distant 3rd or 4th cousin several times removed had died and they were researching his family tree to find the closest relative.
It was true. This company also offered to take care of all of the court matters - for half of what he would get. I begged him to drive to Columbus OH and do the court thing himself and get all of the money he was entitled to, but he didn’t feel like it. He ended up getting in the $35k range - but would have been more if he wasn’t so lazy about it!
It wasn’t until some time later that I realized “I” should have offered to do the court thing for him - for half of the money! That company - if all of the other closest relatives let them - probably made more money out of this than all of them.
