LONDON—A father who claimed he was trying to protect his family when he stabbed a social worker who was conducting welfare checks at his home, has admitted to a jury he had kept his three children indoors for “over a year” because of his fears of COVID-19.
Sulai Man, 34, denies attempting to murder Themba Nkomo, 61, who was attacked in the hallway outside the family’s flat in Wood Green, north London, on Aug. 6, 2021.
Man also denies wounding police constables David Turpin and Luke Smith with intent, when they went to the aid of Nkomo, who was stabbed eight times.
The trial at the Old Bailey has heard Man, who is also known as Sulai Bukhari, had a long-running dispute with Haringey Council’s social services department, which had repeatedly sought to gain access to the flat to check on his children, who have special needs.
On Wednesday Man was cross examined by prosecutor Simon Ray about the incident and why he had been so determined not to allow social workers to access his flat.
Ray asked him, “In August 2021, how long had it been since the children had been outside?”
Man replied, “Over a year, because of the coronavirus.”
During the pandemic the government had advised people to stay in their family “bubbles” and Man said of his flat: “It was a bubble. Everything they needed was in that bubble and that included love and care.”
Ray asked: “But they did not go outside, even for a walk in the sun? Not once?”
“No,” he replied.
The prosecutor asked him, “You have very fixed views on a number of subjects, don’t you?”
“My mind isn’t flexible. It’s quite black and white,” admitted Man.
Judge: Keeping Children Indoors ‘May be Cruel’
Judge Michael Topolski intervened and asked Man: “There is a point of view that would think it may be cruel not to let the children go outside for a year. Do you accept that?”
Man replied: “Yes. But it’s more complicated and dangerous to take the children out … It would have been nice to go out in the sun. That would have been lovely but it wasn’t straightforward. There is the risk of coronavirus and the house was designed so they could have everything they wanted there.”
Man said there had been “10,000 emails” between himself and social services about the issue of them conducting welfare checks on his children.
The defendant was later asked about his belief that the children would be classed as Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) in the event of them catching COVID-19.
Man said he had read an article which suggested there was an NHS policy in place during the pandemic which classed people with special needs as being DNR and that doctors did not need to consult their families.
Ray said: “That is not in fact the case. I’m not disputing that is what you believed. In the first wave of the coronavirus it was discovered that DNR was in place for certain people, not necessarily children, and that had caused real concern and the NHS concluded that should not have been the case.”
Man replied: “I didn’t know they changed their policy. Are you saying they changed their policy?”
Man said he and his wife were genuinely concerned that if their children caught the coronavirus they would not be resuscitated and he said the thought of it was “incredibly painful for us.”
Ray said: “I’m not doubting how awful that would have been. But there was no such policy in place for healthy children.”
Jury Shown Body Camera Footage of Attack
The court was then shown body camera footage from police officers as they forced entry into the flat after failing to persuade Man’s wife to open the door.
Man had gone outside before the police arrived and was lurking in a communal area, wearing a mask and a black hoodie, and clutching a Swiss army-style knife in his hand.
Suddenly, after the police gained entry to the flat using bolt cutters to cut a chain on the door, Man attacked Nkomo, who had been left in the hallway by the front door.
Ray asked Man why, if he was seeking to protect his family, he had waited until the officers had forced the door and gained entry before he attacked Nkomo.
Ray said, “You were waiting for a reason to attack, rather than trying to stop them, weren’t you?”
Man replied: “My aim was to protect my family. I wasn’t looking for an excuse to attack. I wanted to stop the police harassment of my family.”
Man also said he hoped that by getting arrested he would be able to air in court all the grievances he had against Haringey Council for the way they had allegedly treated him and his family.
Ray then asked about Nkomo and said, “You were attempting to kill him weren’t you?”
“No,” he replied, adding he was only trying to protect his family.
Man repeatedly referred to Haringey social services and the police as a “private army” and he said: “Nkomo was part of that private army because of the way he was conducting himself. He didn’t need to throw punches to be hurting my family. He qualified as part of that private army and that’s why I did what I did.”
“You decided he deserved to die, didn’t you?” asked Ray.
“No,” replied Man.
The defendant described the attack on Nkomo and the police officers as a “moment of desperation.”
The trial continues.
This loony behavior is just something else we can thank Fauci for.
But there still is the concern over the nano particles activated by 5G signals from satellites ...
“Sulai Man, 34, denies attempting to murder Themba Nkomo, 61...”
Those hot blooded Anglo-Saxons at it again!
Complicated. I’d assume he’s SE Asian and probably Muslim, based on the name. He’s also probably just a nutcase.
The person he stabbed was, judging by the name, African. They make very good immigrants (if they’re Christians - Muslims, not so much). Hard working, family and church oriented, and respectful of the traditions of their new country without being ashamed of their own.
sounds like a typical leftist Covid Karen
The court questioning seems ridiculous. England is messed up.
I drive for a living in a city of 1.4 million people. You see the ‘change in attitude’ of drivers when compared to ‘BC times’ (before CCP-Coronavirus times). The change is certainly for the worse. I believe that this phenomenon is everywhere.
Church attendance has dropped a lot, from BC times, people’s attitudes have hardened, and people lack patience. I believe that most people now lack trust in their leaders feel ‘let down’, if not cheated and purposely lied to, by their ‘leaders.
One need only look to Italy’s new leader and the Swedish election results in Europe. Bolsonaro of Brazil, who did not ‘toe the party line’ regarding the CCP- Coronavirus restrictions, is in a run-off election at the end of October.
Here in Canaduh, in spite of True-dolt’s bought and paid for MSM, the new Conservative leader is way up in the polls, in spite of the constant ‘hit pieces’ by the MSM. Closer to home, in occupied Alberta, it looks like the outsider, Danielle Smith, a true conservative, will win the UCP leadership race, and become Premier.
All over the world, people are upset and unsettled, fed up with the socialist Bravo Sierra of the last few years. People want FREEDOM and LIBERTY. BIG change is coming! The ‘talking heads’ of the MSM better smarten up and CUT OUT THE PROPAGANDA! The PEOPLE Will have their say!
He clearly has psychological problems, this line of questioning is probably the only way of getting anything coherent from him.
Very well said.
Interesting.
