Horrifying moment fired principal is seen violently shoving 11-year-old special needs student to the ground in cafeteria of Fresno school: Cops charge him with child abuse

A Fresno elementary school principal was charged with child abuse and endangerment after it was revealed he pushed an 11-year-old special needs student to the ground.

Newly released footage from inside Wolters Elementary School depicts the moment Brian Vollhardt, who resigned amid a police investigation over the summer, violently shoved the boy with autism on June 7.

The video shows the boy pointing at Vollhardt and speaking with him in the school cafeteria along with two other staff members.

As the boy appears to be leaving with the staff, he returns and points at Vollhardt one more time before the principal suddenly pushes the boy in the chest, sending the 11-year-old flying to the ground.

One of the staff members rushes to the boy's aid, and Vollhardt can be seen pointing back toward the child and yelling at him.

Ann Frank, the boy's legal guardian who described him as her son, told ABC 30 that she got a call from Vollhardt that day claiming the student assaulted him.

Frank said it took more than three months for the tapes to confirm what her boy had told her, that it was Vollhardt who knocked him to the ground.

'You cannot put force to these kids like that,' Frank said condemning Vollhardt's actions. 'My son is autistic. Any parents seeing this video, they know what I'm feeling right now.

'My son was pushed with force by this principal who was supposed to protect him.'

In both videos the boy is pointing his fingers in the principal's face, just inches from the man's face, so one can only imagine he was running his mouth as well.

The video is saying it's not about "race". I agree, it's about the fact the child is a brat and needs to learn to behave. When I was in school no kid dared ever point their fingers in the principals face like that.

His response was not ok.
Perhaps he should be a bouncer instead of working with 11 year old autistic kids.

Every school should be equipped with a glass encased time-out office. My high school had one and it was effective keeping kids in line.

The kid can sit there until he calms down and is prepared to behave.

Nope. I'm a retired teacher and I felt like doing that, a lot, but that was a pretty mighty "shove". As an adult, you just have to walk away, it is a no win situation. He must have known there were cameras there and he just lost control IMO.

Yes I agree with you that it's not about race though. Any smart mouthed kid could have triggered that reaction.

It likely wouldn’t have been the first time he did that.

Yea a lot of schools, mostly primary, have them they are called “seclusion rooms”. Some parents have complained about those because their kids are put in them all the time.

Sounds like the kid does not want to work and just wants a constant time out or really just can’t handle the situation at hand.

Did that kid come across as the kind that would become violent or threaten violence?

Even if he did, you don’t touch the kid unless he’s in midst attack of another kid.

I find that some times to understand things it is helpful to reverse the scenario.

If it is acceptable for a teacher to lay violent hands on a child if the child points at them then is it acceptable for a child to lay violent hands on a teacher who points at them?

In my opinion the answer is no both ways.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

From what I can see, yes. The principal could legally only react in kind. If the kid assaulted him he can defend himself. That shove was more than an "in kind" response.

But, there appears to be two special needs aides with the kid and I am mystified why they didn't do anything to control the kid. By law, they can restrain a kid who is potentially violent.

Before No Child Left Behind, this kid would have not been mainstreamed in a regular school. Our special ed department had their own dining hours and for extreme cases, they had their own kitchen facilities.

My volume was down (as usual) when I saw the video.
The push was too rough, considering how small the boy is.
What I have to wonder is what could he have said to trigger this response from the principal?
I have seen such happen if somebody decided to spit at another person. Some folks are so grossed out by getting spat upon, they will react that way before even thinking about it. But nobody’s saying the boy did that.

Maybe he looked at the principal and sneered:
“Mister V, Proud of your Boy in the White House?”
::BOOM!

The child is autistic. When they have a melt down it can be spectacular

The principal was out of line. He’s the adult. The child said words and pointed at him.

it's about the fact the child is a brat and needs to learn to behave.

The child is autistic. What is the adult's excuse?

If an adult laid their hands on my child like that for pointing at them, they would regret it.

“it’s about the fact the child is a brat and needs to learn to behave.”

Without knowing the degree of the kids disability I think shrugging it off as being a “brat” is wrong. I have seen some kids that believe it or not autism is a serious issue.

You haven’t a clue what you are saying!
I raised a autistic son who died three years ago at the age of 40.
Autism is one of the most difficult handicaps to deal with, hands down!!!
This child is locked inside his world.
What this principal did was beyond abuse! Any educator SHOULD know they cannot take personally what a autistic child or adult for that matter does.
You need educated.
And YES I abhor disobedience and lack of respect normally!

Many MANY autistic children are fostered. I raised a autistic “ SON” for 40 years that I did not birth! I fostered him into guardianship.
I am appauled at the ignorance of this thread!
