There were two people aboard and both were killed,

The plane was a Piper Sport, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.

The airport’s single runway sits amid residential neighborhoods in the city of more than 90,000 on the Pacific Ocean. City leaders and many residents advocate closing the airport, citing noise and safety concerns.

"and many residents advocate closing the airport, citing" a desire for their house prices to go up.

“”and many residents advocate closing the airport, citing” a desire for their house prices to go up.”

Step 1: Buy house at depressed price.
Step 2: Lobby for airport closure.

Debris field is small and not linear. I suspect the aircraft spun in, nose down or even a flat spin. Oddly the Piper Sport is placarded for “no intentional spins.” This makes me ask the question, why?

I have not flown this aircraft thus am not an expert on it. My comments are just casual observation. I welcome comments from pilots that have flown this aircraft.

The funny thing is is that the airport is probably the best use of the property for the neighbors.

When the airport closes, what will replace it?

It should be turned over to developers to build businesses and homes, but the neighbors will fight that because they don't want the increased traffic.

In the past they would want a park put there, which would be a net tax spender rather than generator, but because of the homeless problem, they won't want a 24/7 open drug market near their homes.
