In a case of highly charged sticker shock, a Florida Chevrolet dealer admits that it offered to replace the battery in a hybrid car for more than the vehicle is worth.
As reported by the website AutoEvolution, the case of the almost-$30,000 battery was being bandied about on social media for days, with some folks believing the tale and other relegating it to the pile of urban myths.
The story was based on a copy of an estimate for the battery of a 2012 Chevrolet Volt that was making the rounds. The Volt was a hybrid that was produced as Chevy was dabbling in the electric vehicle market. Its place in Chevrolet’s lineup has now been taken by the Bolt.
The estimate said that getting the battery would set the car’s owner back $26,853.99. Other costs brought the total bill to $29,842.15 — essentially $30,000.
According to the automotive site Edmunds, a 2012 Volt is estimated to go for between $7,999 and $17,590 these days.
Chevrolet advertises that its new Bolt starts at $25,000.
In the end, the truth about a used car came from a car dealer – in this case Roger Dean Chevrolet in Cape Coral, which prepared the estimate.
“This is an estimate for a 12 year old vehicle out of warranty and for a battery that is extremely hard to get, due to the older technology of the 12 year old vehicle,” the dealership posted on Facebook in an attempt to set the record straight.

Disposable cars,
I suppose that will shrink the used car market.

Used EVs need to have say 20 mile range, el cheapo battery availability - for say the maids that have to drive about 10 miles round trip.
My 2014 has done very well. 225k, 45 miles per gallon over lifetime of the car. Been a really good vehicle.
Looks like we need a whole new line of loan products - “car battery loans.”
There are companies that hand retool small, out of production batteries for tools, laptops, etc. they charge more than a regular battery would be, but I bet someone other than Chevrolet could rebuild the battery to 80% efficiency or better for half that.
Try and sell or trade that lemon.
The owner needs to stage an “accident”.
I can't understand why Chevrolet isn't leading the world in EVs. Oh wait, sorry, it's only a "hybrid." Baby steps for GM, I guess. Too funny.
And several months ago, the senile Sleepy Joe puppet visited GM's headquarters -- Chevrolet is a division of GM -- and publicly bragged that he's the one who said America must lead in EVs (as if nobody ever heard of EVs before 2021 and Sleepy Joe). Then Sleepy Joe ridiculously said that GM CEO Mary Barra was the one who "ELECTRIFIED the ENTIRE automobile industry! ... I'm SERIOUS ... you led ... and it matters." (As if Tesla never existed ... in senile Sleepy Joe's mind. LOL.)
You cannot make this stuff up! Democrat/RINO politicians are dumb as doornails!
2014 Escort. Now 9 1/2 years old. No breakdowns. Replaced rear upper center led brake light. $120.00. Normal oil & filter changes. New tires a couple of years ago. Other than that, I just enjoy 1) Close to 375 miles range per tank, 2) 10 minute fill-ups, 3) lots of filling stations.
Yes, I think electric cars are the future...after 1) Total upgrade of the grid, 2) nuclear power stations, 3) Much cheaper batteries, 4) 10 minute FULL recharge time.
Shove it, Tesla. I still think Musk is a genius, without which e-cars would never have even started.

Geezus, do you have a Delorean with a flux-capacitor too?
And it's still way overpriced. I would give a lead nickel for one. For it is nothing but a heap of junk right now
GM “green cars” - another Obama/ Green success story - like Solyndra
Whenever the senile Sleepy Joe puppet yells in speeches that “I’M SERIOUS(!),” you know he has no clue what he’s talking about. Senile Sleepy Joe also likes to yell in speeches that, “As a Biden, I promise you that ...” As “a Biden?” Whenever someone refers to himself in the third person, you know he’s a phony used-car salesman. Apparently, “as a Biden,” the senile Sleepy Joe puppet also plagiarized during his political campaigns.
Remember when Govt tried to ban Incandescent light bulbs and subsidized mercury containing florescent bulbs?
No consumers wanted them, and they are now an environmental nightmare.
Today there are some very good LED bulbs made, and for many uses they are great.
but still they don’t keep my chickens warm or make my Lava lamp work.
