Hydrogen peroxide: A healing agent for nerve regeneration
Medical Xpress / University of Miami / Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences ^ | August 16, 2022 | Deserae E. del Campo / Antonio Cadiz Diaz et al

Widely used for modern biomedical research, zebrafish share more than 70 percent of the human genome and possess the impressive power of regeneration. Dr. Sandra Rieger's research on appendage regeneration and nerve damage at the University of Miami has utilized zebrafish for years.

Now, in a study, Rieger uses these natural marvels with innate healing capacity once more to expand her research on the regenerative potential of hydrogen peroxide in wound repair and nerve regeneration.

As a postdoctoral researcher, Rieger made the groundbreaking discovery that hydrogen peroxide is produced in the epidermis and is responsible for promoting nerve regeneration following injury.

Rieger, stated, "It was a great discovery, but at the time we did not know the exact molecular mechanisms that drove nerve regeneration after injury."

In her latest study, Rieger and her colleagues investigated how hydrogen peroxide stimulates nerve regeneration. With the help of fluorescent labeling of proteins in zebrafish and mutant analysis, they used time-lapse imaging to study this process.

"Time-lapse imaging provides a detailed view of the biological processes and relationships between nerves and skin, as well as how these interactions lead to regeneration," explained Rieger. "The findings we sought will answer the question of how the skin affects regeneration, as the skin is so important in producing factors that are essential to the regeneration process."

The study essentially found that hydrogen peroxide reacts to the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) in the skin, which is essential for skin remodeling and aids nerve regrowth into the wound. "This is vital for the restoration of the skin," said Rieger.

"However, we discovered that if hydrogen peroxide is not present in neurons, nerve endings also cannot regenerate," Rieger explained. "It appears that both neurons and skin require hydrogen peroxide to coordinate the regeneration of their nerve endings."

Interestingly, honey was used for centuries on wounds, and it has been found one of its benefits is from hydrogen peroxide generation when it hits moisture.

hydroxyl Radical is how your body kills just about any problem. Applying a hydrogen peroxide directly if you can seems like a no brainier.

I had 100+ terrible bites from fire ants working in my yard.
(not all in one day, during many working sessions).
These fire ants in Florida come in many sizes and colors.
These ants obviously inject bacteria under the skin with the bite. The bite just itches a lot on first night. Next day it itches more and on 3rd day the infection from bite starts to build a bubble. I tried using triple anti-biotic, it did not help much. My doctor told me to use hydrogen peroxide, which I prompty purchased from dollar store. It is so cheap. I soon found out, the hydrogen peroxide apllied to bites 4 times a day reduced itching, infection was subdued, and healing was speeded up. Great stuff.

Works great on hospital acquired infections. That’s why hospitals won’t use it.

Could be a solution for those suffering of neuropathy of the feet to prevent that numbing sensation. Please God let it be true.

Been using H2O2 in my ears for years to dissolve out ear wax.

Has not helped my failing hearing, but does cut the itch without using ear swabs.

Wife loves to slather it on any wound or cat scratch as well.

Hydrogen Peroxide poured on a wash cloth and rubbed under the arms will kill underarm bacteria.

I believe it will only help in the context of an open wound.

There are other supplements that might help with neuropathy occurring within the body, but if one is diabetic, it is much more important to eliminate the blood sugar and insulin issue, first.

If it works for zebrafish It should work on human beings, after all, we are over 70% similar...

Unreal!!!

I use hydrogen peroxide instead of Viagaga coz it’s cheaper and my girlfriend says it kills sperm.

Yep - I make a mixture of salt water and Hydrogen Peroxide to use as a daily mouthwash - it stopped irritation and infections that were occurring under a bridge.

“Been using H2O2 in my ears for years to dissolve out ear wax.”

I put it in my ears, too, because I think (don’t know) that it reduces the chances of getting colds and flu. There’s that connection with ear/nose/throat, so it can’t hurt.

A cap full of hydrogen peroxide and 3 ounces of water makes a good gargle if you feel like you’re getting a cold.
Be careful not to use too much because it bubbles.

However current recommendation is not to use Peroxide more than once on a wound, and it dries out skin.
