The first lawsuits under the PACT Act were filed Thursday, one day after the passage of new protections for those exposed to toxic chemicals at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
President Joe Biden on Wednesday signed the PACT Act, which encompasses the Camp Lejeune Justice Act along with other legal matters pertaining to toxic exposures related to military service. The new measure signed into law gives service members more power to sue over the issue.
The Camp Lejeune Justice Act benefits veterans and families possibly harmed by exposure to toxic chemicals in the drinking water on the North Carolina military base after investigators found the water was contaminated with volatile organic compounds and more than 70 other highly toxic substances.
The contaminated water, which was used for cooking, drinking and bathing, could impact the health of people who lived, worked or served at Camp Lejeune for at least 30 days between Aug. 1, 1953, and Dec. 31, 1987.
Common injuries, diseases and illnesses resulting from the contamination include various cancers, miscarriage, leukemia, Parkinson’s Disease and birth defects.
One person has already filed suit against the U.S. government, saying he developed cancer after serving at the base in the 1980s.

The toxic water and the subsequent coverups are criminal. I expect nothing less from the government, but it has been a disappointment to see the Corps dereliction in the matter.
As a dependent I was at Camp Lejeune for about 9 months in 1959. Fortunately, as far as I have been able to discover, the polluted water wells were not the water supplied to the officer’s quarters - different section of the base. I’m not certain of that, but my brother, 73 and I, 70 have suffered nothing that would indicate we were exposed to it.
This just proves me right once again. Anyone who expects loyalty from the government is deluded. The civilian government has not, and does not, give a rat’s ass about the welfare of those serving in the military. Or anyone else for that matter.
I retired from the VA as a “Rating Veterans Service Representative” about five years ago and the VA had been granting disability for this for several years when I retired so its not really new, just now they are filing Tort claims.
Same here. I was stationed at Lejuene 50 plus years ago and am still refusing to Stand Down. Fooking ambulance chasing maggots.

My dad was stationed there (he was a Marine and in Vietnam) and has Parkinson’s and 3 kinds of cancer. He’s been following this issue and I wonder if he’s the one who filed the lawsuit…

Actually, you didn't miss much. I mean the water was just okay, nothing to brag about.
I was stationed at Lejeune for three years (84-87). But I was actually only there for about 11 months as we were deployed so much.
When I was at Fort Gordon, GA the water was so disgusting that I brought water from home for anything I would consume (coffee, tea).
It’s a losing battle, so it seems.
Now our tax dollars are going to go to lawyers as a kickback for them backing Biden.

I figured this “substantial compensation” bullsh*t was connected to the midterms. More free money from Jo Jo the Clown. The RATS and their lawyers are pimping the hell out of it on the boob tube. All part of the “media” get RAT communists elected.
So what about all the people that got those same cancers who didn’t drink any water at Lejeune. How do they get a “substantial compensation.”?
Don’t worry. There’s enough former and active bases for all the lawyers. Nobody could think that they’re only going to stop at one.
