the odds of a one term president successfully getting reelected later are historically very slim

The percentage of U.S. Presidents vs the number of Americans is very slim to begin with, so the odds of anyone winning the presidency are astronomical as well.

Grover Cleveland was elected twice, with Benjamin Harrison in between. In UK, Winston Churchill was elected Prime Minister twice, with Clement Atlee in between.

Trump has broken many, many precendents and expectations across the board. Best not count him out.
