Is he using a photo and painting on top of it? If not, pretty remarkable likeness

He’s a talented painter. He did some painting of an elephant (apparently one of his favorite things to paint) and gave it to Ellen on TV a few years ago. It was good.

He definitely has real talent.

Reminds me of Andy Warhol’s better stuff.

I have a set of very large (1 meter square) signed lithographs Andy Warhol did of Ingred Bergman. They’re stunning, but not on display bc my family objects to salacious pictures of women.

No. He's not using photos and painting over. That would give these paintings a triteness and dullness that wouldn't jump off the canvass as these clearly do.

That said, portrait artists do use photos in the way they structure an image. After all, eyes, noses, chins, brows, etc. have measurable relationships to each other.

From a quick glance at Depp's portraits, I would say they are quite good. They convey unmistakable likenesses of his subjects and are interestingly composed and unique.

The test will be how their appeal grows from exposure to time. If, after having seen them many times, we and his audience find their appeal growing, we can conclude he has done well.

My guess is that he has a photo, enlarges on copy machine, takes the copy and places graphite paper underneath and traces out lines. I’ve done this a lot, many do. Then you paint the outlined paper, get real creative. It’s a fun, creative way to turn out some interesting art. I’d bet all I own that he did this technique. They are very nice. But not without a template.

He still will have to go some to beat Tony Curtis. Curtis’ estate was valued at one billion and most of that was not from his movies, but his own art.

So he photoshops a line print, and fills in the colors.

Not exactly Rembrandt.

He could be painting over a projected image.

It would probably get him an A in a high school art class, but they are nothing special (except the artist’s name.)

These are actually quite good. Maybe there actually is some talent remaining in Hollywood after all. Who knew?

Many an artist must envy the options available to the super rich who become artists, comfortable, roomy, heated studios, all of the highest quality materials your heart desires, a ready market when you produce.
