The COVID-19 pandemic has led people to wear face masks daily in public. Although the effectiveness of face masks against viral transmission has been extensively studied, there have been few reports on potential hygiene issues due to bacteria and fungi attached to the face masks. We aimed to (1) quantify and identify the bacteria and fungi attaching to the masks, and (2) investigate whether the mask-attached microbes could be associated with the types and usage of the masks and individual lifestyles. We surveyed 109 volunteers on their mask usage and lifestyles, and cultured bacteria and fungi from either the face-side or outer-side of their masks. The bacterial colony numbers were greater on the face-side than the outer-side; the fungal colony numbers were fewer on the face-side than the outer-side. A longer mask usage significantly increased the fungal colony numbers but not the bacterial colony numbers. Although most identified microbes were non-pathogenic in humans; Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Cladosporium, we found several pathogenic microbes; Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Aspergillus, and Microsporum. We also found no associations of mask-attached microbes with the transportation methods or gargling. We propose that immunocompromised people should avoid repeated use of masks to prevent microbial infection.

So, masks don’t stop viruses and now cause microbial infection. Hey, lets all mask up again. We now can get Covid and Microbial infection at same time.

Face masks still litter parking lots, roadsides...

How many are in landfills? They are an ecological hazard.

As I was saying yesterday to someone who says they still wear a mask everytime they go indoors, masks harbor fungus and bacteria. People touch them constantly which completely defeats the purpose. You are not helping anyone. The person insisted he was doing the right thing. Now this study comes out. Will he rethink this? Probably not. But maybe someone else will.

And the disgusting things are polluting our waterways and marine life too.

Stupid liberals go on and on about the environment, but they’re the ones who do all of these destructive things.

It’s a GLOBAL hazard. Millions of masks in landfills, waterways, city streets.

Where’s the OUTRAGE?

Masks are intended to be worn by the sick person to keep them from spewing their spittle when they cough. No the healthy person.

I was on an airplane this past Saturday from Spokane to Denver. The lady directly behind me was coughing throughout the entire flight.
She was not wearing a mask. I personally wish she was.

I had a similar incident flying from Boston to Cancun about 25 years ago. I woke up two days later with a fever and the exact same cough as the woman behind me on the airplane. It ruined my vacation.

I know young and old people who’ve worn masks full time at work in stores for over 2 1/2 years with no problems. Some of the customers have probably had problems with them, though. Peeyoo! ;D
