I’m guessing drugs. Life on the road is hard, and many comedians are depressed. Comedy is the coping mechanism…unfortunately drugs as well…
That would be my first guess, unless he was scheduled to appear before particular grand juries or Congressional committees.
In that case, I would guess that he shot himself twice in the back of the head with a gun, or five times in the forehead with a nail gun, or zip-tied himself into a suitcase.
Some people will do anything to get out of testifying.
